GRAYSON CO. ROLLS BEHIND BOYER'S 18

INDEPENDENCE - Bryan Boyer scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Grayson County past Fort Chiswell 83-64 on Friday night in a Mountain Empire District boys' game.

The Blue Devils (9-2 overall, 2-0 district) also got a career-high 13 points from freshman Chad McMillian, including nine in the first half as Grayson County bolted to a 17-point lead. The Pioneers never recovered.

Wes Self added 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Grayson County, which got points from 11 players.

Fort Chiswell (6-5, 2-1) was led by Jody Burnett, who had 17 points.

BASSETT - Tyree and Cris Hairston led the Bengals to a Piedmont District victory, rallying Bassett from a one-point halftime deficit with a 26-point third quarter.

Tyree Hairston led the Bengals (8-5, 8-4) with 33 points, and Cris Hairston added 15.

Erick Ferguson's 15 points paced the Wildcats (2-10, 2-9).

CHATHAM - Leroy Valentine scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Warriors to a Piedmont District victory.

Magna Vista (4-9, 4-8) also got 10 points from Tony Hagwood.

Franklin Fitzgerald scored 17 for Chatham (4-10, 4-8).

Rural Retreat 63

WYTHEVILLE - The Maroons survived the Indians' second-half comeback bid by sinking 12 of 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to post a Hogoheegee District victory.

Led by Chris Rakes and W.K. Smith - who combined for 51 of Rural Retreat's 63 points - the Indians cut their deficit to three points, 54-51, through three quarters.

George Wythe (9-3, 7-1) wouldn't fold. Boosted by their free-throw shooting, the Maroons outscored Rural Retreat 26-12 in the fourth quarter.

Aaron Andrews led Wythe with 23 points. Skip Copenhaver and Andre Cook added 10 each.

Rakes scored 27 and Smith had 24 for Rural Retreat (1-10, 1-7), which beat Chilhowie on Tuesday.

BUENA VISTA - The Fighting Blues jumped out to a 26-8 first-quarter lead and never looked back, cruising to a Pioneer District victory over the Rockets.

Mike McElroy led Parry McCluer (10-5, 3-3) with a game-high 25 points and Brandon Garrett poured in 19. Carl Sanderson chipped in 12 points.

Robby Huffman led Craig County (3-7, 1-3) with 18 points.

The Spartans rolled to a Blue Ridge District victory at home, keeping the Wildcats winless.

Salem (6-5, 2-1), which plays defending Kentucky state champion Louisville Fairdale today in the Crestar Roundball Classic at the Salem Civic Center, had 11 scorers led by Scott Hall's 15 points. Kevin Garst added 14.

Rockbridge County (0-12, 0-3) was led by Jamie Farrell's 12 points.

Alleghany 54

COVINGTON - Chris Childress and Michael McGuire scored 21 points each to lead the Terriers past the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District game played at Dabney-Lancaster Community College.

Childress scored 11 points in the third quarter to help William Byrd (10-1, 2-0) stretch an eight-point lead to 16. McGuire made three 3-pointers. Jeremy Obenchain added 14 points for the Terriers.

James Hughes led Alleghany (8-3, 1-2) with 20 points. Dusty Rowland added 10.
