BLACKSBURG - Satish Kumar, program director of Schumacher College in the United Kingdom, will discuss the relationship of ecology and spirituality Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the ground floor living room, Hillcrest Hall, Virginia Tech.

Kumar's visit is sponsored by the Virginia Tech Honors Program, the XYZ Student Art Association, the Department of Art and Art History and the Mountain Lake Workshop.

YMCA Thrift Shop

BLACKSBURG - The YMCA Thrift Shop will hold a moving sale Saturday, Jan. 28. All merchandise will be half price.

The store will begin to accept donations at its new location in Gables Shopping Center on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

The new store will open for business Feb. 1.

Earthquake relief

CHRISTIANSBURG - Contributions for relief of earthquake victims in Japan are being requested by the American Red Cross, which helps support the relief efforts of the Japanese Red Cross. Checks made out to the American Red Cross and earmarked for Japan

Pulaski Yard Sale

PULASKI - Donations will be accepted starting Feb. 1 for the annual Pulaski Yard Sale. which raises money for a number of causes.

Furniture, clean clothing in good condition, and other items to be sold May 4-6 will be taken at the former People's Drug Store building in the Maple Shade Shopping Plaza from 8 a.m. to 12 noon Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

This year, proceeds from the sale will be distributed among the Emergency Needs Task Force, Pulaski Free Clinic, Youth Emergency Shelter, New River Valley Habitat for Humanity and the SHARE Christmas food basket program. Further information is available from Anna Powers (980-2418).

Town budget award

BLACKSBURG - The town of Blacksburg's budget has received a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada. A jurisdiction's budget document is rated in how well it serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.

Budget documents must be rated "proficient" in all four categories to get the award. Since the association began making the award in 1984, approximately 650 jurisdictions have received it.

The Government Finance Officers Association, headquartered in Chicago, is a non-profit professional association of 12,650 government finance professionals throughout North America.
