EXPRESS ACQUIRES BREZEAULT

The Roanoke Express announced Friday it has signed center Reggie Brezeault, who was playing with the West Palm Beach (Fla.) Blaze of the Sunshine League.

Brezeault, 24, played 26 games with the Express last season and had four goals and four assists. He was the last player to be cut from the Express training camp this season.

In 23 games for the Blaze, Brezeault had 13 goals and 15 assists. He will join the Express before tonight's game in Johnstown.

In other sports news in the region:

George Mason holds a two-point lead over VMI after the first day of the Virginia Division I wrestling championships in Lexington.

The Patriots advanced 11 wrestlers to today's semifinals, the most of any school. VMI had nine wrestlers make the championship bracket.

The team standings: George Mason, 27 points; VMI, 25; James Madison, 22; Virginia, 20; Old Dominion, 19; Virginia Tech, 10.5; William and Mary, 6.

Annandale High School linebacker Maurice Daniels, the Group AAA player of the year, has made an oral commitment to Penn State. Daniels, a 6-foot-1, 225-pound linebacker, picked the Nittany Lions over Missouri.

Also making an oral commitment was defensive back Sorie Kanu from T.C. Williams High in Alexandria. Kanu picked Michigan State over Virginia and Duke. Daniels and Kanu were both rated among the state's top 25 prospects by the Roanoke Times & World-News.

Lind Hartsell, an assistant baseball coach at East Carolina University, has been hired as an assistant coach at Radford University.

Hartsell, 28, is a Kinston, N.C., native and a 1989 graduate of Atlantic Christian College. He will coach the pitching staff and recruit for new coach Lew Kent.
