GILES DEFENSE DOES JOB ON SHAWSVILLE

SHAWSVILLE - Giles held Shawsville without a field goal in the third quarter and went on to defeat the Shawnees 66-48 on Friday night in a Three Rivers District boys' game.

The Spartans (6-5 overall, 2-1 district) started Raypheal Milton in the second half and he got the third quarter rolling by hitting a 3-pointer. Giles outscored the Shawnees 23-4 in the period, and Milton finished the game with nine points.

John King added 16 points for the Spartans and teammate Josh Stephens chipped in 15 - 11 in the second half.

Shawsville (1-12, 1-1) made a run in the fourth quarter to cut its deficit to 12 behind Jeremy Nichols and Tommy Jones, who scored five each in the period, but the Shawnees could get no closer. Nichols and Jones finished with 12 points each.

Pipestem, W.Va. 59

Gateway Christian 53

BLACKSBURG - Eli Testerman had 14 points to pace three scorers in double figures as Pipestem, W.Va., came from behind to defeat the Crusaders in a non-district game.

Gateway (6-5) led by 10 at halftime, thanks to Monte Pence, who scored 13 of his game-high 19 in the first half. The Crusaders then struggled through a poor-shooting third quarter as Pipestem outscored Gateway 19-7.

Anthony Edwards and Mike Fox hit two free throws each as Pipestem (14-1) held off a late Gateway rally. Edwards finished with 12 points and J.P. Wills added 11.

The Crusaders also got 16 points from Aaron Meadows and 10 from Jay Perfater.

Marion 58

Carroll County 48

MARION - Jason Ringley scored 17 points to lead Marion (7-5) to a non-district victory over the Cavaliers.

Matt Larrowe's 21 points led Carroll County (4-10).

Grayson County 83

Fort Chiswell 64

INDEPENDENCE - Bryan Boyer scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils past the Pioneers in a Mountain Empire District game.

Grayson County (9-2, 2-0) also got a career-high 13 points from freshman Chad McMillian, including nine in the first half as the Blue Devils bolted to a 17-point lead. Fort Chiswell never recovered.

Wes Self added 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Grayson County, which got points from 11 players.

The Pioneers (6-5, 2-1) were led by Jody Burnett, who had 17 points.

Liberty 104

Buckingham 64

BEDFORD - Five Minutemen scored in double figures, and Liberty put 68 points on the board in the second half in clobbering the Knights in a Seminole District game.

The Minutemen (12-1, 12-1) finished the game with a 38-point fourth quarter.

Gregg Reynolds, who made three 3-pointers, and Mike Padgett led the Minutemen with 15 points each. J.J. Coles added 13 and Zak St.Clair and Steven Shrader chipped in 11 apiece.

Brian Marks led Buckingham County (0-12, 0-12) with 14 points.

Cave Spring 60

Aimee Beightol scored a game-high 23 points as the Knights rolled past the Colonels in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Beightol scored six of her points in the second quarter as Cave Spring (9-3, 5-1) outscored Fleming 16-4 to take a 12-point halftime lead.

The Knights then hit four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to put away the game. Jaclyn Banks added 12 for Cave Spring.

The Colonels (7-4, 1-4) got 10 points each from Kiann Trent and Felicia Manns.
