THRIFT-STORE GOODIES TRAVEL FAR

When Joe Pope made his rounds as a Salvation Army driver, the donated items he picked up for distribution to thrift stores often were exported instead, police said Friday.

Fairfax County police said Pope and two other men stole more than $100,000 in clothes and other property and sold them in African and Central American countries through two Lorton export companies.

Charged with conspiracy to commit grand larceny are Pope, 44, of Alexandria; Henry E. Squire, 37, of Lorton; and Charles Boachie, 37, of Lake Ridge, authorities said.

``Mostly he [Pope] was delivering all lousy stuff to the Salvation Army,'' said Fairfax Police Capt. Mike Lomonaco.
