Ground will be broken in the spring for a $1.9-million expansion of the Blacksburg branch approved as part of a 1993 bond referendum.
That figure included $150,000 to computerize all of the regional library's three branches' checkout and card catalog systems, a task that will be tackled during 1995.
The 16,000-square-foot renovation will enlarge and modernize the library's Draper Road building, which is cramped and has a notoriously leaky roof.
Architectural designs and landscaping plans are ready to go out to bid, which library officials say will be awarded within the next several months.
Construction will force the library to close its circulation services for several days, which will be designated as the project proceeds.
However, the library's technical services, such as access to the Blacksburg Electronic Village, will be available throughout.
Blacksburg library supporters also intend to raise up to $300,000 to supplement the $1.9 million. That money would go toward paying for extras, such as new furniture, that library officials cut from the bond referendum.|
