REVIVAL AT THEATER

A citizens' group is moving ahead with a campaign to revive the Lyric Theatre, a 65-year-old movie house on College Avenue in Blacksburg.

Members of the group hope to refurbish the Lyric so foreign and avant-garde films, recitals, plays and lectures could take center stage.

Organized last year, the Lyric Council, Inc., now has nonprofit status and a 12-member board of directors. Membership meetings will be held in the spring and fund drives will be conducted soon thereafter.

Preliminary estimates indicate the renovation could cost more than $500,000.

The group acquired a six-month option from the theater's owners, Blacksburg Realty Partnership, to evaluate the building's condition and develop an action plan for its future.

Committees have also been designated to handle issues such as renovation, fund raising and promotion.
