VANDERBILT REPLACES VMI WITH LA. TECH

Vanderbilt is adding Louisiana Tech and dropping Division I-AA foe Virginia Military Institute from its 1995 football schedule, both Nashville newspapers have reported.

Rod Williamson, a spokesman for the Vanderbilt athletic department, said he's not sure the contracts have been signed.

With the change, Vanderbilt will have an open date the second week of the season. This will give the Commodores and new coach Rod Dowhower an extra week to prepare for a Sept.16 visit to Notre Dame.

The Louisiana Tech game is to be played Nov.11 in Nashville.

Detra Edmunds and Nick LaRosa picked up first place honors in the triple- jump and 1,000 meter run respectively to highlight the day for the Virginia Tech womens' and men's track teams at the Wendy's Indoor Track Invitational at the Rector Field House.

Edmunds won the triple-jump competition with a leap of 39 feet, one inch, and she also placed fourth in the long jump to lead the womens' team. In the mile run, three different women, Tracey Shea (4th), Melissa Ward (6th), and Jennifer Pohlig (8th), placed in the top-10. Although no team scores were kept, North Carolina dominated the event on both the mens' and womens' side with top-six finishes in more than half of the track events.

LaRosa, a freshman, won the 1,000 meter run in a time of 2 minutes, 31.7 seconds. Teammate Geoff Tonini came in third place in the 500 meter dash and Chris Cursi tied for fourth in the high jump.
