TEACHERS' JAILING ONLY TEMPORARY

Yes, kids, the rumors are true; but it's only a temporary situation.

Six staff members of Montgomery County Public Schools will be hauled off to a makeshift jail at Holiday Motors in Blacksburg today to help raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The prisoners will take pledges for the association's fund drive and then report to their cell, where they will remain until they can raise $600 in pledges or for one hour.

All funds raised will go to help Muscular Dystrophy Association patients at Montgomery Regional Hospital.

The prisoners will spread their sentences over a five-hour period. Wanda Price, assistant principal of Blacksburg High School, reports at 10 a.m., followed by Jeff Perry, Bethel Elementary School principal, at 11 a.m.; Barbara Clark, assistant principal at Christiansburg Middle School, at noon; Herman Bartlett, Montgomery County Public Schools superintendent, and John Martin, assistant superintendent for support services at Montgomery County Public Schools, at 2 p.m.; and Paula Ely, principal of Margaret Beeks Elementary, at 3 p.m.

DAVID STRATHY, a sixth-grader at Auburn Middle School, and REBEKAH KINGERY, a fourth-grader at Shawsville Elementary, are school-level winners in the National Geography Bee, sponsored by National Geographic World and the Chrysler Corporation.

They will take written tests to qualify for competition at the state level. Nearly 100 of the top scorers on this exam will compete in Virginia's State Bee on April 7.

The National Bee will be held May 30-31 in Washington, D.C. The top three national prizes are scholarships of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000.

Second-graders at Christiansburg Primary School are learning the universal language of signing.

They have practiced daily since September in order to communicate with 14-year-old Jason Hall, brother of their classmate Lorne Bowman. Jason has been deaf since birth.

The brothers have motivated the class to keep practicing and learn to sign.

Nomination forms are available at the chamber offices or at the School Board personnel office. The completed forms must be returned by Feb. 10.
