Equity conference

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg branch of the American Association of University Women will hold its third annual Educational Equity Conference Jan. 31 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Donaldson Brown Conference Center.

The conference will incorporate information from "Hostile Hallways," the published findings of a study on sexual harassment of students.

The study found that 81 percent of surveyed students reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment in school. Nearly 25 percent of these students said the incidents made them not want to attend school.

The conference's keynote speaker, Elyzabeth Holford, director of equal opportunity/affirmative action at Virginia Tech, will speak at 1 p.m. on the necessity of sexual harassment policies.

Participants may choose one of three afternoon workshops: "Intervention Strategies for Teachers" lead by Paula Wilder; "Developing a Sexual Harassment Policy" lead by Rene Rios; or "Sexual Harassment and Its Impact in Students" by Peg Sorrentino.

Corporate sponsors of the event are the Pulaski office of Appalachian Power, the Celco Plant of Hoechst Celanese, Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corporation and Virginia Tech's Women's Center and Women's Research Institute.

The registration fee of $10 includes lunch.

The registration deadline is today.

To register for the conference, call the Donaldson Brown Conference Center, 231-5182.
