Road meeting tonight

CHRISTIANSBURG - Plans to widen Peppers Ferry Road (Virginia 114) are the focus of a joint meeting of the 114 Citizens' Network and Friends of Christiansburg tonight at 7:30 p.m., in the New River Valley Mall community room.

Members of Christiansburg Town Council and Virginia Department of Transportation Resident Engineer Dan Brugh have been invited to the gathering.

Ann Hess, chairman of the 114 Citizens' Network, urged town residents who would like to see bikeways and sidewalks along Peppers Ferry Road to make their desires known now, so VDOT can build them into its plans. "If some of the traffic can be reduced through sidewalks and bike lanes, it will benefit everyone," she said.

Hess said current plans to widen the busy highway include a five-lane thoroughfare with a center turning lane and no median starting at the intersection of Peppers Ferry Road with North Franklin Street. Construction is slated to start in 1999.

For more information, call Hess at 382-8235.
