Marlin led the General Motors' Winston Cup teams in the first day of their final three-day practice at Daytona International Speedway, driving a lap at 191.898 mph in his Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Robert Pressley was second in another Chevy (191.816 mph), followed by Michael Waltrip in the fastest Pontiac Grand Prix (191.530), Jeff Gordon in a Chevy (191.002) and Kyle Petty in a Pontiac (190.799).
Twenty-one drivers took laps during the day, but Dale Earnhardt was not one of them. Earnhardt had a commitment for one of his sponsors, Goodyear, so Virginian Jimmy Hensley drove Earnhardt's Chevy to a lap of 190.396 mph, which was eighth fastest.
Earnhardt will be at the track today and Wednesday as teams prepare for the Daytona 500 on Feb.19.
The Grand National cars practiced Friday through Sunday. Joe Nemechek was the fastest of 45 drivers, at 187.970 mph in a Chevy.
