TECH WOMEN SOLIDIFY RANKING WITH VICTORY

Jenny Root scored 25 points, and 25th-ranked Virginia Tech used an 8-0 spurt to start the second half to knock off James Madison 68-54 on Monday night in a women's game at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg.

Root hit 10 of her 17 shots from the field and also pulled down eight rebounds for the Hokies (14-4), who won their seventh consecutive game. Christi Osborne added 14 points for Tech, and Terri Garland had eight assists and two steals.

The Hokies led 27-25 at halftime despite shooting 37.9 percent (11-for-29) from the field. Root scored five points during the second-half run that put James Madison (10-6) down by 10. The Dukes closed to 41-37 with 11 minutes, 34 seconds left, but Tech went on a 14-5 run to put the game out of reach. The Hokies shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) in the second half.

JMU was led by Sarah Schreib's 14 points and nine rebounds.

In another women's game Monday night:

Ferrum 57, Greensboro 54: In Ferrum, Kia Williams scored 15 points, and the Panthers rallied from a four-point halftime deficit for a Dixie Conference victory.

Glossary Smith added 13 points for Ferrum (9-6 overall, 3-2 Dixie), and Marlo Jamison Ferguson finished with 11 points. Tamika Martin blocked nine shots, two of them in the last 51 seconds to preserve the victory for the Panthers.

Greensboro (3-9, 1-2) got 16 points from April Thompson.

Men

Washington and Lee 78, Bridgewater 74: In Lexington, Jon Coffman scored 21 points and Derek Carter added 17 as the Generals (8-7, 4-5) rallied from a six-point halftime deficit for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory over the Eagles (11-6, 6-5).

W&L trailed 39-33 at halftime, but shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) after intermission to earn the victory.

Bridgewater (11-6, 6-5) was led by Mike Dayton's 17 points. Craig Tutt added 13 for the Eagles, who shot 52.5 percent (31-for-59) but were hurt by 22 turnovers.

Liberty 88, Coastal Carolina 69: In Lynchburg, Peter Aluma scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Flames (8-8, 4-3) past the Chanticleers (5-10, 3-4) in the Big South Conference.

Liberty held Coastal Carolina to 26-percent field-goal shooting in the first half and built a 42-26 lead.

Keke Hicks led the Chanticleers with 21 points.

UNC Wilmington 86, George Mason 64: In Fairfax, Cris Meighen scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the final 14 minutes, and the Seahawks (9-8, 3-2) broke open a close game midway through the second half on the way to a Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Patriots.

Preston McGriff added 16 points and a career-high 17 rebounds for UNC Wilmington, which had a 60-29 advantage on the boards. Curtis McCants led the way for George Mason with 17 points.

Randolph-Macon 79, Guilford 62: In Ashland, Kurt Axe scored 23 points to lead the Yellow Jackets (7-8, 5-4) to an ODAC victory over the Quakers (8-9, 6-6).

Shawn Peterson led Guilford with 24 points and 10 rebounds.
