Lottery to add 2 drawings

RICHMOND - The Virginia Lottery will add a Pick 3 and a Pick 4 drawing Monday through Saturday beginning next week.

Starting next Monday, Jan. 30, there will be Pick 3 and Pick 4 drawings at 1:50 p.m. and 10:58 p.m., according to a lottery department news release.

``This is an opportunity for Pick 3 and Pick 4 players to play these games much earlier in the day,'' Lottery Director Penelope W. Kyle said.

``Based on the experience of other states who offer both day and night games, the lottery expects to see an increase of about $500,000 a week in Pick 3 and Pick 4 sales after the introduction of the new day drawings,'' Kyle said.

EPA, state dispute Patrick, Henry water

MARTINSVILLE - The Environmental Protection Agency is demanding tougher water treatment measures for three industries in Patrick and Henry counties, a move local officials say will hinder economic development.

Virginia Department of Environmental Quality officials plan to meet with EPA officials concerning the federal agency's assertion that the state agency's conditions for water treatment are too lenient.

The EPA's objections concern the use of chlorine to disinfect water at the Koehler waste treatment plant and the amount of dye allowed to remain in the water when it is released from the facility. Also at issue are dye levels at the Irisburg plant in Henry County and Martinsville's wastewater treatment plant across the Smith River.

Capital murder charged in Augusta

STAUNTON - Two Waynesboro men have been charged in connection with the slaying of a man whose body was found in the George Washington National Forest, Augusta County Sheriff Glenn Lloyd said Monday.

Keith McCourt, 25, and Alan Riffe, 27, were arrested over the weekend and charged with capital murder, robbery and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, Lloyd said. They are being held in the Augusta County jail pending a bond hearing.

The body of Frank Stafford of Stanley was found in the national forest in Dec. 9 near Stuarts Draft. Lloyd said robbery is believed to be the motive for the shooting death of Stafford, 34.
