BOOTHE, Clifton Edward, 67, of Route 2, Bedford, died Sunday, January 22, 1995, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford County on June 17, 1927, a son of the late John Smith Boothe and Hermie Florence Bowling Boothe. He was a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church, Montvale, and was a retired mechanic with B & H Motor Company. He is survived by his wife, Bertie L. Boothe; three sons, Clifton E. Boothe Jr., Roger L. Boothe, both of Bedford, John H. Boothe, Goode; one daughter, Gayle A. Boothe, Montvale; four brothers, William Boothe, Paul Boothe and Jack Boothe, all of Montvale, Clarence Boothe of Maryland; three sisters, Fannie Dooley, Roanoke, Lucille Moore, Maryland , Dora Burks, Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Eddie L. Boothe and Shelley R. Boothe, both of Bedford, Natalie J. Boothe, Goode; numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 25, 1995, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John C. Mitchell Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. BRYANT, Mary Alice, 88, of Roanoke, died Sunday, January 22, 1995, in a Roanoke hospital. Mrs. Bryant was the widow of Milton Mosby Bryant and a member of Oakland Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Gladys and Kent Sutcliffe, Juanita (Nita) and Lawrence Williams and Rachel and Milton Hurley, all of Roanoke; granddaughters, Shelagh Oliver and husband, Tom, Salem, Cathleen (Cathy) Wright and husband, David, Boones Mill; great-grandson, Shane Abercrombie, Salem; a sister, Kate Cross, Roanoke. Funeral services will be at Oakey's North Chapel, 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, 1995, with the Rev. H. Kelly Dampeer officiating. CARTER, William O., Jr., 64, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 23, 1995. Mr. Carter was born January 6, 1931, son of the late William O. Carter Sr. and Lea E. Alls Carter. Mr. Carter was a 32nd Degree Mason, Shriner, and Past Master of the Pleasants Lodge #63 AF & AM. He was a corner stone contributor at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley and a permanent contributing member of the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital. He was a member of the 100 Million Dollar Club. He was a former officer of the Bank of Salem and president of the Magic City Pump and Tank Company, Inc. He was a graduate of William Fleming High School Class of '49, the Virginia-Maryland School of Bank Management, University of Virginia 1968, Class of '71 Slonier Graduate School of Bank Management, Rutgers University. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Naval Reserve and served three years in the U.S. Army Reserves. He laid the corner stone at the Roanoke Regional Appalachian Red Cross Blood Center in 1962. Surviving are his wife, Jean D. Carter, Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Karen C. and Robert W. Gordon, Roanoke; daughter, Terri Lynn Carter, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; one sister, Mary Lou Rickman, Halifax. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel at 3 p.m. Wednesday with Dr. Harry Y. GREGSON, Mary Poage, 84, of Roanoke County, died Monday, January 23, 1995. She was the widow of Carl L. Gregson Sr. and a member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church. She was an alternate delegate to the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco, a past president of the Roanoke Valley Republican Women's Club, a former member of the state central Republican committee, and a former member of the Roanoke County Republican Party. Mrs. Gregson served on former President Richard Nixon's White House Conference on Aging. She was a former member of the Roanoke County Welfare Board, former member of the Board of Directors of the McVitty House, a former member of the Back Creek Social Service Club, and coordinator of all Social Service Clubs of Roanoke County. She was a former teacher in Roanoke County at Back Creek and Clearbrook Elementary Schools. She was a member of the Roanoke County Women's Club and was listed in Who's Who in American Politics. Surviving are five children, Naomi Ramsey, Fishersville, Carol Mills, Roanoke, Carl L. Gregson Jr., Fredericksburg, Molly Kelly, Roanoke, Jeff Gregson, Richmond; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 11 a.m. Wednesday with Dr. F. Tupper Garden and the Rev. Gene Edmunds officiating. HALEY, Mary Vernon Johnson, 90, of Christiansburg, died Monday, January 23, 1995, in Montgomery Regional Hospital. Born in Montgomery County on August 8, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Blair and Louemma Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, John R. Haley; sons, Robert, Jonnie, Willard and Claude; a grandson, Harold Bond. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Ward and Mary Haley, Eugene and Mary Haley, Sherman and Virginia Haley; three daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Carl Hudson, Louise and Marshall Sutphin all of Christiansburg, Ruth and Cecil Franklin, Weswego, La.; one sister, Zela Carver, Riner; two daughters-in-law, Kathleen Haley, Shawsville, Thelma Haley, Christiansburg; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Johnson, Ethel Johnson, both of Christiansburg; 23 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. HOLT, Cletus V., 88, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 23, 1995. He was retired from the City of Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Kelly Holt; his son, Carl C. Holt. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Naomi G. Holt, Roanoke; two brothers, Rufus Holt, Roanoke, William Holt, Bedford; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. KIRBY, Roy H. Sr., 67, of Florence, S.C., died Monday, January 23, 1995, after an illness. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 25, in Trinity United Methodist Church, Darlington, S.C. with interment following in Grove Hill Cemetery with Masonic Rites directed by Belk Funeral Home. Mr. Kirby was born in Albemarle County, Va., son of the late Lewis and Irene Henry Kirby.

He served with the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Kirby was retired owner and operator of Crozet Sanitary and Disposal in Crozet, Va. and moved to Florence after his retirement in 1979. He was a charter member of Swamp Fox Antique Car Club, a member of St. David's Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Lynchburg, and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Dunn Kirby of Florence; two daughters, Mrs. Archie W. (Gi nger) Muckenfuss of Ridgeville, S.C., Ms. Diane Kirby of Roanoke; two grandsons, Roy (Chuckie) Kirby and Archie (Trey) Muckenfuss. Mr. Kirby was predeceased by a son, Roy H. Kirby Jr. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

KIRKWOOD, Ethel Almire, 95, of Bedford, died Sunday, January 22, 1995, at Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Bedford County on August 13, 1899, a daughter of the late William Henry Almire and Sarah Virginia Mitchell Almire. She was the widow of Lawrence Radford Kirkwood Sr., and was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence R. Kirkwood Jr. and Dorothy Kirkwood, Culpeper, William R. and Rahma Lee Kirkwood, Roanoke; a daughter, Ola K. Powell, Bedford; two granddaughters and their husbands, Carolyn P. and Billy Graham, Jane P. and J.R. Burnette, all of Bedford; three great grandsons; and two great granddaughters. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Phil ip N. Hunsicker officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. KRUSE, Heinz Pail, 76, of Bedford, passed away Sunday, January 22, 1995. Memorial service 1 p.m. today, Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford.

LEE, Thomas Roosevelt Sr., of Clifton Forge, formerly of Bedford, quietly passed into eternal rest Saturday, January 21, 1995 at 9:30 p.m. A chapter completed; a page forward; a life well lived; a rest well earned. He was born November 23, 1902 in Bedford, Va. Early in life, Mr. Lee professed his belief in Christ and became a loyal and faithful worker in the Washington Street Baptist Church. He attended public school in Bedford, Va. God blessed him with natural musical ability and a beautiful voice. This talent he used throughout his life to bring joy, peace and comfort to others. He was united in holy matrimony to late Ella B. Lee, and to this union, two sons were born. Mr. Lee was a devoted husband, a loving and kind father, a good neighbor and friend, always willing to help others. Loving and kind, sincere and true, beautiful memories he has left behind. During his life of service, he was a member of the Deacon Board for 69 years. His warm and caring personality was like a ray of sunshine. Whenever he was present, it was with his dynamic glow that he was affiliated with many groups. In addition to his longtime service as a Deacon, he was a member of the Masons of Peaksview Lodge #160, Mens Chorus, Senior Choir, Ladies Aide Society, Eastern Star, The Harmonizing Five, and also the former singing group, The Rondaliers. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella and his son, Thomas Jr. Thomas was loved by all and was a highly respected citizen who will be sorely missed throughout the City and County of Bedford, Va. Left to cherish the memory of our beloved are a devoted son and daughter-in-law, Wilbert Novarra and Esther R. Lee, Covington; a loving sister, Ardella Hampton, Chicago, Ill.; nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Born August 13, 1919, in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Sam Marshall and Ammisitta Semones Marshall. MONGLE, Rev. Maurice J., 84, of Kingsport, Tenn., died Sunday, January 22, 1995, at his home. He was born and had lived most of his life in Washington County before moving to Kingsport. He attended Emory & Henry College and the University of Richmond. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service having been Postmaster of the Holston, Virginia Post Office until 1965. He was ordained as a Minister in 1951 and was a retired Southern Baptist Minister. He was former pastor of Holston Baptist Church, Washington, Co., Calvary Baptist Church, Abingdon, Midway Baptist Church, Bristol, Huricane Baptist Church, Buchanan Co., and Cornoth Baptist Church, Council. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ernestine Sloan Mongle, Kingsport, Tenn.; one son, John Hayter Mongle, Abingdon; one brother, Rev. Joe B. Mongle Sr., Monroe, La.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Rev. Maurice J. Mongle will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday January 25, in the Farris Funeral Chapel with burial to follow in the Knollkreg Memorial Park. RASNAKE, Anne Belle Hawley, 56, Dublin, died Monday, January 23, 1995, at her residence. She was preceded in death by her husband, Silas McDonald Rasnake. She was active and held office in the Dublin Recreation Department and was active in the Dublin Lions Club. She was instrumental in the operations of the Pualski County Flea Market and Craft Show. She was a 32 year employee of Hercules, Inc. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Randy Rasnake of Elyria, Ohio, and Joe and Valerie Rasnake of Dublin; two daughters and one son-in-law, Donna Mae Rasnake of Blacksburg, and Sandy R. and Charles E. Burns of Dublin; mother, Ola S. Hawley of Christiansburg; four brothers, William Wade Hawley of Lynchburg, Bobby J. Hawley of Christiansburg, Buddy Hawley of Fairlawn, and Nelson Hawley of Christiansburg; one sister, Pauline R. Hawley of Richmond; and eight grandchildren. In addition to her family she is survived by many friends and shopping buddies. SLUSSER, James Glennie, 64, of Christiansburg, died Sunday, January 22, 1995 at Montgomery Regional Hospital. Mr. Slusser was born in Montgomery County on April 11, 1930. He was the son of the late Mark Jennings and Ida Brown Alls Slusser. He was a retired employee of Va. Tech, with 40 years service. Survivors include two daughters, Teresa S. McGuire, Blacksburg, and Tammy C. Slusser, Alexander; two sons, Mark A. Slusser, Blacksburg, and Glen Barry Slusser, Christiansburg; three sisters, Inez S. Epperly, Laura Lou Lafon, and Jeannie Pendergrass, all of Blacksburg; three brothers, Ralph Slusser and Logan Slusser, both of Blacksburg, Wilbur Slusser, Newport News; special friend, Ora Davis, Blacksburg; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. SWITZER, Patricia Ann Kageals, 50, of 1504 Kings Mill Drive, Salem, died Sunday, January 22, 1995. A native of Princeton, W.Va., she was the wife of Charles D. Switzer and employed by Graham-White Manufacturing Company. UPP, Fay S., 86, of Radford, formerly of Decatur, Ill., died Saturday, January 21, in Radford Community Hospital, Radford. She was born October 29, 1908 in Paris, Ill., the daughter of James Matthew and Toletha Belle (Sutten) Swinford. She married Willard E. Upp May 3, 1941 in Decatur, Ill. Mrs. Upp was a member of Central Christian Church, Decatur, Ill. She attended the First Christian Church in Radford and was formerly employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Decatur office. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary in Decatur, Ill. She is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers. She is survived by her husband, Willard Upp; one son, Gary Upp, Radford; one sister, Mrs. Eva Peck; and one brother, Max Swinford, both of Paris, Ill.; one granddaughter, Shannon Upp, Radford. WHITTAKER, Martin Jackson, 60, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, January 21, 1995 at a Montgomery county hospital. He was born March 28, 1934 in Pearisburg, the son of the late Roy Estil and Josephine Criner Whittaker. He is survived by his wife, Dreama Blankenship Whittaker; one son, David Whittaker, Narrows; two brothers, Roy Estil Whittaker Jr., Narrows, Jesse J.
