The State Transportation Board approved the construction, to be fully funded by the speedway, allowing westbound traffic from the U.S. 58 bypass to enter the speedway area on state Route 976. Currently, all west, north and eastbound traffic converges at the intersection of U.S. 220.
Speedway officials hope to have the project - expected to cost about $100,000 - completed by the Hanes 500 on April 23.

VMI tennis player Jolyon Constable has been chosen for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association list of 1994 Scholar Athletes, the ITA's Academic All-American squad. Constable, who currently holds a 3.822 cumulative grade-point average, is one of three players from Virginia and one of two from the Southern Conference to be chosen for the honor.
Mike Gentry, a strength and conditioning coach at Virginia Tech, has been named the National Strength and Conditioning Association's 1995 Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year for the Metropolitan Collegiate Athletic Conference. The national award will be presented at the organization's annual conference in Phoenix in June.
Virginia Tech cross country coach Steve Taylor has been named to the U.S. World Cup Marathon team. The five-man team will compete for the World Cup April 9 in Athens, Greece. This year's World Cup will be held on the original marathon course which began in Marathon and ended in Athens in 490 B.C. The race distance is 26 miles, 385 yards.
Three basketball teams from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference are ranked in this week's NCAA Division III South Region poll. Hampden-Sydney is ranked No.1, while Roanoke is No.7 and Bridgewater is No.8. Dixie Conference member Christopher Newport is No.6.
