RADFORD - Blacksburg author Simone Poirier-Bures will read from her latest books, "Candyman" and "This Shining Light" Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Radford University's Flossie Martin Gallery.

"Candyman," published last fall by Oberon Press, is the story of an Acadian family living in Halifax in the 1950s. "This Shining Light" is an autobiographical piece about Poirier-Bures' experience traveling and living in Xania, Crete and Greece in 1966. Both books, the author says, speak to the experiences of families and young girls coming of age.

Thursday's reading is free and open to the public. It coincides with the Flossie Martin Gallery exhibit of student art work celebrating individual differences.

Salvation Army aid for Japan

PULASKI - New River Valley residents who want to help earthquake victims in Japan can do so through the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army, which runs eight community centers, a children's home and a women's shelter in Kobe, site of last week's devastating earthquake, is accepting monetary donations. Properties belonging to the organization suffered minor damage in the quake.

The Salvation Army is distributing blankets, staple food, cleaning supplies, clothing and toiletry items in Kobe.
