AMBROSE, Helen M., 99, of Roanoke, died Saturday evening, January 21, 1995, in Lewis-Gale Hospital, after a short illness. She had been a resident of Our Lady of the Valley Home in Roanoke for several years. She was a native and long-time resident of Bangor, Maine. She would have attained 100 years of age on January 27. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ralph Ambrose; and two sons, William and Thomas. She is survived by a son, James of Tryon, N.C.; and three daughters, Elizabeth Chaplin of Whispering Pines, N.C., Ellen Scanlin of Gainesville, Ga., and Eileen (Lee) Dougherty of Roanoke. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Thursday, January 26, at Oakey's South Chapel from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral mass will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, January 28, at Our Lady of Nazareth Church, Electric Road, Roanoke. Rev. Kenneth Stofft will officiate. She will be interred in Bangor, Maine, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Francis House, 824 Campbell Ave., Roanoke, VA 24016, or your favorite charity.

BEAN, James Arthur, 51, of Salem, died Monday, January 24, 1995. Arrangements by John M. Oakey's Salem Funeral Home.

BECKNER, Rosa Nell, 79, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 1995. She was the widow of Levi L. Beckner. Mrs. Beckner retired from Halmode Apparel. Surviving are two nieces in North Carolina; and special friends, Ogretta D. Bayer of Hollins, and the Joe and Sue Casaceli family of Roanoke. Memorials may be made to Peters Creek Church of the Brethren. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Paris E. Bain. BREEDING, Bessie Elizabeth, 96, of Cleveland, Va., died Wednesday, January 18, 1995, at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Russell County and was of the Primative Baptist Faith. She was the widow of Linzy Breeding. Survivors include four daughters, Mary J. Davis, Vinton, Hazel Fields, Lebanon, Va., Martha Shaffer, Bristol, Tenn., and Nellie Lasley, Cleveland; eight sons, John Breeding, Vinton, Jim Breeding, Richmond, Maine, Dallas Breeding and Clarence Breeding, both of Cleveland, Henry Breeding, Staunton, Calvin Breeding, Lebanon, Sherman Breeding, Boones Mill and Charlie Breeding, Bristol; two sisters, Eliza Bausell, Lebanon and Gertrude Wallace, Seattle, Wash.; 35 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren. CLINGENPEEL, Bedford H., 82, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 24, 1995. He was a retired carpenter and was a member of West End Presbyterian Church. He was predeceased by a brother, Anderson H. Clingenpeel of Rocky Mount. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Una DeWeese Clingenpeel; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Magdalene C. and Don Angle of Slidell, La., Doris C. Horn of Roanoke, Patricia C. and Barry Spradlin of Stewartsville; seven grandchildren and spouses, Melissa and Rick Rickrode, Beth and Fred Birmingham, all of Slidell, La., Jeff and Tina Horn of Roanoke, Eric and Sonya Horn of Vinton, Troy Horn of Roanoke, Dana Ferguson of Montvale, Dwayne Ferguson of Roanoke; four great-grandchildren, Rachel and Trey Rickrode, Joshua Horn, Mary Caitlyn Birmingham; a sister, Sarah C. DELLIS, Dennie Pendleton, 90, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, January 23, 1995. She was a retired employee of American Viscose Corporation and was the widow of Daniel Bennett Dellis. Surviving are two nieces, Laverne Combs, Roanoke, and Edna Mills, Richmond; dear friends, Bill and Louise Musselman, Vinton. Funeral services will be held 12 p.m. Friday, January 27, 1995, from the Lotz Vinton Chapel. The Rev. Carter Sloan and the Rev. Gene Arnold will officiate. Burial will follow in Patmos United Methodist Church Cemetery, Huddleston. Friends may call at the Lotz Vinton Chapel after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

FLORA, Carl B.,78, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 23, 1995 in a local hospital. Mr. Flora graduated from National Business College and joined a CPA firm in 1936. Ten years later, he joined Flora Realty Co., a firm run by his father, Charlie, and his brother, Cecil. He later acted as secretary, treasurer and as president of the Roanoke Valley Board of Realtors. He was one of the early developers of Smith Mountain Lake, where he was involved in several subdivisions. Mr. Flora served on 9 committees for the real estate board and was a charter member of the Roanoke Society of Residential Real Estate Appraisers. He was a certified property manager and a certified public accountant. Mr. Flora taught principles of real estate for 3 years at Roanoke College. He was also a member of the National Society of Real Estate Appraisers. In 1988, he was listed as realtor of the year for the Roanoke Valley Board of Realtors. Mr. Flora also served as president of Peery & Flora LTD Realtors, he served as a director for the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce and was on the advisory board for Colonial American National Bank. He also help organize the Roanoke Valley Multiple Listing Association. Survivors include his wife, Leola Ball Flora, Roanoke; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carl Benjamin Flora Jr. and his wife, Dawn, Raleigh, N.C., Barry L. and Andrea Flora, Gary and Linda H. Flora, all of Roanoke; three g randchildren, Barry Lee Flora II, Adam Randolph Flora, and Jodi Rene Flora, all of Roanoke; also surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Flora was a member of Windsor Hills United Methodist Church where the funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. D. Michael Meloy officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Roanoke City Emergency Medical Services Team in c/o the Roanoke City Fire Department or the City Rescue Mission. HOWLETT, Clyde L., 78, of Green Valley Dr., Southwest Roanoke County, went to be with the Lord, Monday, January 23, 1995. Mr. Howlett was born in Hillsville, September 1, 1916, son of the late Lewis and Susie Howlett and was a member of the Presbyterian Church. He and his family moved to Roanoke in 1950, and he worked for the Norfolk & Western Railroad for 31 years until his retirement in 1981. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Yates Howlett in January , 1985. Mr. Howlett is survived by one son, Robert Howlett; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Lawrence Lester, Ann and Dick Eggleston, all of Roanoke; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a special family member, nephew and wife, Earl and Mamie Vest, Check; a sister, Mable Hill, Radford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Oshiar and Elizabeth Howlett, Radford, Harless and Mitch Howlett, Martinsville; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Irvin and Virginia Yates, Christiansburg; also a number of nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Stephanie Richards for her love and care. Funeral services will be conducted by his grandson, Rev. HOYKAR, Thomas Steven, 86, of Salem, died Tuesday, January 24, 1995. He was a long time member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Roanoke, and a charter member of the Northside Lions Club. He was a Manufacturing Specialist for General Electric Company for 48 years. He is survived by his wife, Laverne W. Hoykar; sister, Sylvia Klopcic, Cleveland, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sherwood Memorial Park with Pastor John M. Hawn officiating. HUDSON, Elsie Mae Lane, 92, of Roanoke, died Monday, January 23, 1995, in a local nursing home. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband, Walter G. Hudson; a daughter, Betty M. Hudson, Roanoke; a son, Bobby G. Hudson and his wife, Eleanor of Philadelphia, Pa.; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Laura Cookus of Roanoke. KINGERY, Mary H., (Mae), 100, of Rocky Mount, died Tuesday, January 24, 1995, in a Roanoke hospital. Mrs. Kingery was the widow of Walter P. Kingery Sr., and was preceded in death by a daughter, Mildred Frances Kingery, two daughters-in-law, Polly Kingery and Naomi Kingery, one son-in-law, Chester Moore and two grandchildren, Sharon Kingery and Dick Renick. She was a long time member of the Sandy Ridge Baptist Church and the WMU. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Adeline K. Moore, Abingdon, Emma K. and William L. Renick, Nashville, Tenn.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, William R. Sr. and Catherine Kingery, Walter P. Jr. and Diane J. Kingery, all of Rocky Mount, Charles F. Kingery, Franklin, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Sandy Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Dillon officiating. NOONKESTER, Myrtle Hall, 83, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 24, 1995. She is survived by two daughters, Mona Stinson and Donna Noonkester; a stepdaughter and husband, Charlotte and Perry Monroe. Mrs. Noonkester leaves three beloved grandsons, Rickey Sink, Rocky Sink and Shawn James. She has three sisters, Edith Bandy, Dorothy Bradley and Mary Riley; three brothers and their wives, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hall, Mr. and Mrs. William Hall and Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Hall. SHARTZER, Minnie Cadd, 95, of Roanoke, died at Lewis-Gale Hospital Monday, January 23, 1995. She was the beloved wife of Roy D. Shartzer; mother of one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Rollins, Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, E. Morris Cadd, Vinton, Robert E. Cadd, Roanoke. She is also survived by two stepdaughters, Mrs. Verna Haskins, Roanoke, Mrs. Evelyn Quesenberry, Radford; two stepsons, Robert Shartzer, Richmond, Harry Shartzer, Summerhill, Pa.; one sister, Mrs. Lola Najjum, Roanoke. Mrs. Shartzer was the dear grandmother of five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a dedicated son-in-law, Johnny Haskins, Roanoke. STARR, Cora Lee Davis, 74, of Salem, died Tuesday, January 24, 1995, in a Salem hospital. She was retired from the Tultex Corporation. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Starr Janney. She is survived by a grandson and his wife, Michael and Rhonda Janney of Salem; two granddaughters, Teresa Janney of Salem, Wendy Janney of Roanoke County; son-in-law, Doug Janney of Roanoke County; four great grandchildren. THURMAN, Albert Allen, 78, of Redwood, passed away Monday, January 23, 1995, at his home. He was born November 12, 1916, the son of the late Hudie Albert and Minnie Alice Blankenship Thurman. He was preceded in death by his son, Joel B. Thurman and a great-granddaughter, Ashley Motley. He is survived by his wife, Doris Campbell Thurman; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary Alice and Junior Adkins of Redwood, Maggie and Billy Dudley of Rocky Mount, Sandra (Kaye) Thurman of the home; t hree sons and daughters-in-law, Swanson and Linda Thurman, Ravon and Nancy Thurman, all of Redwood, and Garry and Donna Thurman of Snow Creek; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nannie T. WHITLOCK, Hazel B., 70, of Christiansburg, died suddenly Tuesday, January 24, 1995 at Radford Community Hospital. Surviving are her husband, James E. Whitlock; two sons, Nelson Leon Pettus, Steven Wayne Pettus, all of Christiansburg; one daughter, Judy Pettus Austin, Roanoke; one sister, Violet B. Wiechering, of Texas; two stepchildren, Becky Whitlock, James E. Whitlock Jr.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, January 26, 1995, at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Burrell Baker, with burial in the Den Hill Cemetery. WITHERS, Valeria Forbes, 85, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, January 23, 1995, at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond H. Withers. She is survived by sister, Edith and brother-in-law, Donald Sullivan, and sister, Catherine Forbes. She was a long time and very active member of Belmont United Methodist Church. There will be a memorial service for her at Belmont United Methodist Church, 8th St. & Jamison Avenue, S.E., on Saturday, January 28, 1995, at 2 p.m. The family suggests that memorials be made to the church.
