FIRE, RESCUE CREWS ELECT THEIR OFFICERS

Several Montgomery County volunteer fire and rescue organizations have announced new officers.

Eddie Walters is the new captain of the Christiansburg Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Walters, 26, has been a squad member for 7 1/2 years and is certified as an emergency medical technician. He works for Monarch Foods in Salem.

Other new officers are: Kelly Walters, first lieutenant; Matt Carroll, second lieutenant; Colin Bishop, motor sergeant; Harold Spradlin, sergeant; Kathy Dowdy, secretary; Kay Hauschildt, treasurer.

Also, Barbara Jones, chaplain; Anthony Bishop, reporter; Greg Hutchins, communications officer; Julie Roop, public relations officer; Roger Bryant, training officer; Gary Kendall, supply sergeant; Rick Schack, librarian; Hank Epperly, historian; and Eddie Trump, parliamentarian.

The volunteer crew responded to 2,745 calls for help in 1994, driving a total of 40,631 miles and devoting 10,210 hours. The calls included 1,298 medical emergencies, 535 traffic accidents and 349 fires.

There are 44 members of the squad, up from a low last year of 27.

Blacksburg Rescue Squad's new captain is MaryEllen Cotellese, 31, a nurse practitioner who has been with the squad for eight years.

Other officers are: Jerry Olinger, first lieutenant; Jennifer M. Heath, Dennis J. Cotellese, M. Wayne Myers Jr. and Michael E. Kirk, second lieutenants; Allison L. Keister, secretary; Benjamin G. Simmers, treasurer.

The crew has about 60 members who respond to calls in a 53-square mile area of Blacksburg and surrounding parts of the county.

In 1994, the Blacksburg Rescue Squad answered 1,883 calls, devoting more than 11,500 hours and driving almost 50,000 miles.

James W. Epperly continues as chief of the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department. James M. Williams is assistant chief.

Other officers are: H. Michael Dickerson, captain and assistant training officer; Gratton H. Thompson, first lieutenant and chaplain; Danny Ray Yopp, second lieutenant; Harold D. Akers, secretary-treasurer; Billy Hanks, training officer and engineer. Other engineers are Mike Moore, Roy Redd, Floyd Childress and Jeremy Williams.

The Christiansburg Fire Department answered more than 1,000 alarms in 1994, not including many calls associated with last winter's ice storms, Chief Epperly said in a letter to membern |

Jerry Turpin, a Montgomery County deputy sheriff, is the new chief of the Long Shop-McCoy Fire Department. Johnson Reynolds continues as captain of the community's Rescue Squad.

Other Fire Department officers are: Greg McCoy, captain; Doug Williams, first lieutenant; Larry Akers, second lieutenant.

Wanda Morehead is first lieutenant of the Rescue Squad and Duane McCoy is second lieutenant.
