RELIGION BRIEFS

CHURCH WOMEN UNITED, an ecumenical and interracial group organized for service to the Roanoke Valley and the world, will focus on the work of the League of Older Americans at its annual meeting Friday. Amanda Crabtree, a staff member of the LOA-Area Agency on Aging, will speak at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church, 402 Second St. S.W., at 10:30 a.m.

THE REV. DR. R. WOODS KENT, executive of the Virginia Region of Disciples of Christ congregations, will visit Belmont Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Sunday. Kent, whose office is in Lynchburg, will officiate at the installation of the Rev. Michael Barnes as pastor. The service is at 1:30 p.m. and will be preceded by a potluck luncheon .

THE REV. E.T. BURTON, pastor of Sweet Union Baptist Church, will speak Feb. 8 at 6:15 p.m. at Colonial Avenue Baptist Church, 4165 Colonial Ave. S.W.

His theme will be: ``Why Is 11 on Sunday Morning the Most Segregated Hour of the Week?''

Burton, who is black, and the church's pastor, the Rev. Branan Thompson, who is white, have worked together in the Roanoke Valley Ministers Conference since 1968.

ROANOKE COLLEGE will have two lectures with religious themes as part of its March convocations. Both will be held in the Sutton Student Center Ballroom from 11:20 a.m. to noon and are open free to the public.

On March 2 the Rev. Dr. Vernie Bolden, a professor at New River Community College and retired minister of Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, will discuss "The Bell Curve: Race and Intelligence."

The March 16 lecture by Al Staggs is entitled "The Legacy of Dietrich Bonhoeffer" and commemorates the 50th anniversary of the death of the German theologian.

Lunch, which is optional, will be held after each presentation.

A VALLEYWIDE GOSPEL SING is scheduled Saturday at 7 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, 1601 Colorado St. in Salem. The event will feature the Virginians Quartet, the Dominion Trio and Evelyn Conner. An offering will be taken.

VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION, a United Methodist-sponsored program in which adults give a week to repair or build homes for the needy, plans work trips to the Charleston, S.C. area June 19-24 and June 26-30.

Construction skills are not needed although they are helpful for carpenters, electricians or plumbers. A trip costs the volunteer approximately $125 per week for food and lodging. This summer the Virginia Conference will assist impoverished American Indians in the Carolinas. Call 989-3335 for more information.

NOON ORGAN CONCERTS will be held each Wednesday in February at First Presbyterian Church, 2101 S. Jefferson St. The free, 25-minute programs will be performed by Marilyn Meador, Robert Chapman, Verle Witmer and Sally Goff..

The series will focus on music by American composers.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, dating to 1851 and one of Roanoke City's oldest, has set a goal of 1,000 new members over the next 31/2 years. The board of the church has pledged itself to prayer for guidance and for intentional efforts to bring valley residents into its membership through revitalized worship and fellowship events.

ROANOKE CHURCH OF CHRIST, 2606 Brandon Ave. S.W., will sponsor a free video series, "Hidden Keys to Loving Relationships," beginning Feb. 12. Motivational speaker Gary Smalley is featured.

The programs, for which registration is requested by Feb. 7, will be at 6 p.m. at the church. Child care will be provided but reservations must be made by calling 776-8210.

CRYSTAL SPRING BAPTIST CHURCH, 3411 Rosalind Ave. S.W., has scheduled a Chosen People Ministries program for Feb. 5 at 10:55 a.m. The organization educates about Judaism with a goal of converting Jews to Christianity.

DAVID FITZGERALD, who has been chosen as minister of music at Grandin Court Baptist Church, will begin his work there March 6. Personal commitments in his present church in Louisville, Ky., will delay his arrival from an earlier date.

BELMONT CHRISTIAN CHURCH, a Disciples of Christ congregation, has chosen Robin Spangler as its new Chancel Choir director. She has begun her duties after serving as interim organist at Fort Lewis Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Salem. She also directs the Junior Generations Choir of First Baptist Church in downtown Roanoke.
