WARNER WANTS AIRPORT PARKING PERKS TO STOP

Free parking for members of Congress using one of the nation's most crowded airports may soon go the way of the defunct House bank and special post office.

Although the free parking is a longstanding practice that has withstood the assault on other congressional perks, the new Republican-controlled Congress may put a stop to it.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., will co-sponsor legislation to end parking perks at Washington National Airport, spokesmen for Warner said.

Warner will have help in the House of Representatives from a Democrat.

``I think it will pass this year,'' said Rep. James Moran, D-Alexandria. ``This is a Congress that recognizes that people resent real or perceived perks, and this is clearly one of them.''

Moran plans to target free parking in a larger bill that would scrap the congressional committee set up to oversee operations at National and Washington Dulles International Airport.
