COVINGTON KEEPS ROCKBRIDGE WINLESS

COVINGTON - Covington took the lead for good with a 12-0 run late in the second quarter, and the Cougars cruised past winless Rockbridge County 80-62 on Thursday night in boys' action.

Cory Whitaker led Covington (8-5) with 15 points and Dusty Roman added 14 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Jeff Tucker added 13 points and Mike Barber contributed 12.

Milo Byers led the Wildcats with 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Ricky Wright scored 12 points.

Mount Carmel 65

COVINGTON - The Warriors couldn't stop the Indians, led by Kenny Prescott's triple-double, as Covington Boys' Home powered past the visitors in a non-district game.

Prescott poured in a game-high 23 points, grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds and blocked 10 shots for the Indians (4-10). Donald Downing added 15 points, 10 assists and five steals, and Sean Riddick tossed in 13 points.

kevin Good led Mount Carmel (11-3) with 22 points, including three 3-pointers. Chris Stoneberger added 16 points.

HOT SPRINGS - The Chargers (8-4) used their quickness to build a big early lead and ran away from the Rockets (3-9) in a non-district matchup.

David Buzzard, who went 10-for-10 from the free-throw line, and Stewart Alexander scored 14 points each to lead Bath County. BIlly Thomas had 13 and Matt Williams added 11.

Eric Gillingham scored 11 points to lead Craig County.

Wednesday's game

James Monroe 73, Alleghany 60: In Peterstown, W.Va., Mark Grigsby tossed in 27 points and Jamie Fox added 22 as James Monroe defeated the Mountaineers in a non-district game.

James Monroe outscored Alleghany 31-18 in the middle two quarters to take control.

The Mountaineers got 18 points from James Hughes and 13 from Donnie Costigan.
