BASHAM, Mary Julia 72, of Vinton, passed away Friday, January 27, 1995, in a local hospital. She is survived by three sisters, Ella Frances Basham, Vinton, Annie Lee Lloyd, Moneta, Christine B. Morris, Mechanicsville; one brother, Pat Obrien, Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Basham, Roanoke, Bertie Vance, Baltimore, Md.; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Monday, January 30, 1995, from the Lotz Vinton Chapel, with the Rev. Don McCaskill officiating. Burial to follow in Mountain View Cemetery. FINLEY, Audrey Hill, 93, of Atlanta, Ga., died Thursday, January 26, 1995, in a Decatur, Ga. hospital. She was the widow of Earl B. Finley Sr. Surviving are a son, Earl B. Finley Jr., Atlanta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Earl Byron Finley III, Tucker, Ga., Suzanne Finley Ulmer, Greenville, S.C.; four great-grandchildren, Leanne Finley, Robyn Finley, Tyler Ulmer, Hayley Ulmer. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside, Evergreen Burial Park at 11 a.m., Monday, with the Rev. H. Fleet Powell Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

FINNEY, Jesse Lewis Sr., 71, of Route 2, Rocky Mount, died Thursday, January 26, 1995, at Memorial Hospital, Martinsville-Henry Co. Born in Franklin County on February 26, 1923, the son of the late Thomas Nappier Finney and Harriet Jamison Finney. He was a retired employee from the E. I. DuPont Co. He was a member of New Vision Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Eunice Davis Finney of the home; daughters, Janice F. Fletcher of Spotsylvania, Patsy F. Jansons of Tazewell, Danna F. Bullock of Southern Pines, N.C.; sons, Jesse L. Finney Jr. of Greensboro, N.C., Garry W. Finney of Roanoke; sisters , Delma Richardson of Martinsville, Helen McKinley of Taylorsville, Ky., Mildred Martin of Collinsville, Susie Narron of Middlesex, N.C.; brother, Charlie Finney of Martinsville; six grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Byrd Napier and two brothers, Garnett and James Finney. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at McKee Funeral Chapel with the Rev. J. D. Harmon officiating. Interment will be in Henry Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at McKee's Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. and other times at the home, Rt. 2, Rocky Mount. GARRETT, Iris Viola, 78, of Montvale, died Friday, January 27, 1995 in a Roanoke hospital. She was born in Harlan County, Kentucky on January 13, 1917, a daughter of the late Ahijah Smith Snow and Laura Bell Ledford Snow. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Wilson Garrett, one son, Henry Wayne Garrett, and one brother, Phillip Smith Snow. She was retired from Woodhaven Nursing Home and was a member of Shawanee Baptist Church in Shawanee, Tenn. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Diane Garrett, Montvale; a daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Burge, Montvale; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Catherine and Hilton Dooley, Montvale; one brother, John Eugene Snow, Ewing, Va.; one sister, M ary Louise Lester, New Tazewell, Tenn.; two sisters-in-law, Elsie Lee Williamson, Montvale and Mildred Alphin, Gainesville, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 30, 1995, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. A. C. Echols officiating. HALE, Eugenia Bell, (``Genie""), 86, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, January 27, 1995, in a local hospital. She was the widow of Herman C. Hale and also was preceded in death by her son, Leonard Clay Hale. She was a member the Waverly Place Baptist Church. Surviving are three daughters and son-in-law, Virginia Creasy, Dollie and Jack Nichols, all of Roanoke, Phyllis Nunley Torian and John Torian, Rocky Mount; a daughter-in-law, Lucille Webber; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Eliza Stump, Roanoke, Avis Poff, Ruby Stump, both of Floyd. Funeral services will be at Oakey's Vinton Chapel 1 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Charles Hoffler and the Rev. Carter L. Sloan officiating. Interment will be in the Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.

HEDRICK, Norman G., 87, of Roanoke, died at his home Thursday, January 26, 1995. Surviving are his wife, Grace Hedrick; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Terry Kirkpatrick, Wilmington, Del.; two granddaughters, Tracey Walls and Dawn Kirkpatrick, both of Wilmington, Del.; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph Hedrick, Rahway, N.J.; sister, Margaret Kissling, Rahway, N.J.; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Wilmington, Del. The family will receive friends at the home, 5260 Crossbow Circle, Apt. 4C, after 3 p.m. Sunday, January 29, 1995. HOPKINS, William Jackson, of Waverly, was called by the Lord in His infinite wisdom to eternal rest and peace on Saturday, January 21, 1995. He was born on January 24, 1923, to the late Reverend Morton and Eura Claytor Hopkins of Rocky Mount. Family and friends fondly called him Jack. He was preceded in death by a sister, Linnie A. Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins received his formal education in the public schools of Franklin County, Va. He earned the B.A. degree in Agricultural Economics at Virginia State College and a Master's Degree in the same field at Rutgers University in New Jersey. Further study was completed in educational administration and supervision at: Virginia State University, The College of William and mary, The University of Virginia, Old Dominion University and Rosary Hill College, Buffalo, N.Y. He worked two years in Southhampton County, Va., three years in Northhampton County, Va., and twenty-seven years in Sussex County, Va. as an educator. He also served as the State of Virginia Representative on the National Board of Directors of the National Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. He taught extension classes to teachers for the College of William and Mary for five years. Former Governor Mills E. Godwin appointed him to the Governor's Advisory Committee for Child Abuse and Neglect. Mr. Hopkins served as the first principal of Central High and Central Elementary Schools. He also held the position of Director of Instruction. After leaving principalship, he became the first black General Supervisor in the State of Virginia representing Sussex County, Va., as its County Administrator. He retired in 1988. Jack was initiated into Beta Gamma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha at Virginia State College in 1947. He was an active member of Epsilon Iota Lambda in Suffolk, Va., since 1951. The Chapter honored him as Citizen of the Year in 1983 and Alpha Man of the Year in 1993. He joined Holy Trinity Baptist Church in Franklin county, Va., at an early age. As an adult, his steadfast love for the Lord and people led him to join the fellowship at Wilbourne Baptist Church, Waverly, Va. There he served in many capacities to include: Trustee, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School Teacher, and choir member. He also served as President of Sussex County Sunday School Union. He leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted and loving daughter, J. Varonda Hopkins and a caring, devoted son, William ``Jay"" Hopkins, both of Petersburg; two loving sisters, Majorie H. Price, Alexandria, Vesper H. Edwards, Rocky Mount; three dedicated brothers, Morton B. Hopkins, Norfolk, Howard B. Hopkins, Roanoke, Rexford L. Hopkins, Rocky Mount; one brother-in-law and dear friend, Charles Price, Alexandria; three faithful sisters-in-law, Bernice Hopkins, Norfolk, Emma Hopkins, Roanoke, Mary Hopkins, Rocky Mount; former wife, Jacquelyn Justice; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on 12 noon Wednesday, January 25, 1995, at the Wilborne Baptist Church, Waverly, Va.

HOUCHINS, Thomas C., 51, of Ridgewood, N.J., formerly of Roanoke, died Sunday, January 22, 1995. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Pearl B. Houchins. He is survived by his wife, Marge Houchins, Ridgewood, N.J.; sons, Scott and Chris Houchins; daughter, Pamela Houchins, all of Irving, Texas; sister, Charlotte Houchins, Roanoke. LANE, Antje Mansueld 52, of Route 5, Box 234, Bedford, died Thursday, January 26, 1995, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of Walter E. Lane and was a Ceramic Artist in Sedalia. She was born in Hamburg-Wandsbek, Germany, July 6, 1942, a daughter of Adrianus and Edith Wolf Mansueld. In addition to her husband she is survived by two daughters, Kim I. Greeson, Charlotte, N. C., Michelle C. Greeson, Bedford; two sons, John F. Greeson, Saginaw, Mich., Michael P. Greeson, Bedford. A memorial service will be conducted, Sunday 3 p.m. at Carder-Tharp Funeral Home Chapel, Bedford. Memorial contributions may be made to your local hospice.

MANNING, James W. 69, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, January 24, 1995. Bishop Manning Sr., was the husband of the late, Hazel Smith Manning; and is survived by seven children, Mrs. Emma Thompson, Mrs. Betty Brooks, Miss Gracie Manning, Mrs. Evelyn Manning, all of Baltimore, Md., James Manning Jr., Roanoke, Samuel Manning, David Manning, both of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Robert Manning, Baltimore, Md.; one godchild, Donna Law, Landover, Md.; a devoted friend, Mrs. Nona Barlow, Roanoke; 14 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews and cousins and many friends. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, January 29, 1995, at 2 p.m. from Southern Hills Holiness Church with Elder Golden Darby and Brother Aubrey Barbour officiating. McREYNOLDS, Carolyn Clay, of 3804 Yates Road, Shawsville, died Thursday, January 26, 1995. She was a native of St. Paul and had lived in Shawsville for the past several years. She attended Faith Wesleyan Church. Survivors include her husband, Jeff McReynolds; four daughters, Jennifer McReynolds, Shawsville, Janet Epperly, Christiansburg, Karen Lawson, Elliston, and Dana Wyatt, Bristol, Tenn.; three sons, Jeffery McReynolds, Pulaski, Scottie McReynolds, Blacksburg, and Grey McReynolds, Castlewood; her mother and stepfather, Thelma and Ray Richardson, St. Paul; one sister, Shirley True, Richmond; one brother, Don Clay, Petersburg; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conduct ed at 2 p.m. Sunday in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Rogers and the Rev. Jack Carnley officiating. MEREDITH, Hattie Louise, 88, of the Spruce Run Community near Newport, died Thursday evening, January 26, 1995, following a long illness. Born in Giles County on July 12, 1906, she was a daughter of the late Walter Thomas and Maryjane Weiss Vaught. She was the wife of the late Robert Lee Meredith and mother of the late James Robert Meredith. She was a member of the Spruce Run Holiness Church. Surviving are on son, William D. ``Bill'' Meredith, Christiansburg; two daughters, Helen Louise McClaugherty, Christiansburg, Christine Morris and son-in-law, Ronald Morris, Roanoke; one brother, Roy Vaught, Blacksburg; two sisters, Lillie Harless, Elliston, Margie Barnett, McCoy; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and two special caring friends, Karen Long K elly and Lee Ellen Kelly, Glen Lyn. NEIGHBORS, Frank Snavely, 84, of Wytheville, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, January 26, 1995, at his home. Mr. Neighbors was born June 20, 1910, the only child of the late Burley & Minta Neighbors. he was a lifelong farmer and form many years was a merchant of ginseng, roots and herbs, metals, and raw furs. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine Neighbors, and a daughter, Nancy Stamm of Anderson, Ind. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Belle Neighbors, Wytheville; son-in-law, Lewis Stamm, Anderson, Ind.; four grandchildren, Andrew Neighbors, Williamsburg, Roger Stamm, Allentown, Pa., Sarah Belle Neighbors Whitmore, Midlothian, Bonnie Stamm Wilkinson, Anderson, Ind.; one great-grandchild, Seth Wilkinson; also survived by two cousins. A gravesid e service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, January 29, 1995, at the Lebanon Lutheran Church Cemetery conducted by Pastor Joseph Shumate.
