NAMES & CHANGES

United Way elects board

SUE W. ROBERTSON has been elected chairwoman of the board of the United Way of Roanoke Valley. Robertson, a community volunteer, had been vice chairwoman and assumed the office of chairwoman upon the resignation of ANGELICA D. LLOYD, formerly of Shenandoah Life Insurance Co. Lloyd has moved from Roanoke.

BENJAMIN JENKINS, president and chief executive officer of First Union National Bank of Virginia, has been elected chairman of the 1995 general campaign. JOSEPH VIPPERMAN of Appalachian Power Co. was elected vice chairman and chairman-elect of the board, and JAMES RITCHIE, Roanoke's assistant city manager, has been elected treasurer.

Division chairmen are H. CLARKE CURTIS of Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home, administrative; HEIDI KRISCH, a community volunteer, community problem-solving; DEANNA GORDON, Roanoke County schools, planning; and ROBERT G. LEE of WDBJ (Channel 7), marketing and communications.

BANKING

Bedford Bancshares Inc. and its subsidiary, Bedford Federal Savings Bank, have named new officers. NANCY T. SNYDER was named secretary of the parent corporation and the savings bank. She has been with Bedford Federal since 1987, is administrative assistant to the chief executive officer and manages the bank's human resources functions.

FAYE GRANT was promoted to assistent vice president of Bedford Federal.

Formerly assistant secretary, Grant will be responsible for management of the retail deposit service at the bank's main office. She has been a customer service representative since 1979.

GROVER C. ``CLEVE'' McGEHEE was named assistant vice president of Bedford Federal Savings Bank. He is operations officer and data processing coordinator at the bank. Before joining Bedford Federal in 1990, he was employed by a savings institution in Lynchburg for 10 years.

JANE SCHENK JURKUS was promoted to assistant vice president. Formerly assistant treasurer, she manages the checking and demand deposit services for the savings bank. She has worked at Bedford Federal for 14 years.

RHONDA A. LONG was named assistant secretary. Employed by Bedford Federal since 1984, she is supervisor of the mortgage loan servicing department.

CAROLYN RIDDLEBERGER has been promoted to assistant vice president of NationsBank in Roanoke. Riddleberger is banking center manager of the Crossroads office. She joined the bank in 1977.

Also at NationsBank, TONY CRUMPACKER and PAMELA MAIER have joined the staff of the Daleville office as consumer bankers. Crumpacker, an assistant vice president, has worked for NationsBank for 28 years, most recently at the Brambleton Avenue office in Roanoke. Maier worked at the Troutville office before its consolidation with the Daleville office. Before joining NationsBank, she worked for the Winston-Salem, N.C., Chamber of Commerce and the Charlotte Convention and Visitors' Bureau.

COMMUNICATIONS

Alcatel Telecommunications Cable has promoted J. PETER JOHNSON to quality assurance engineer for the Roanoke fiber plant, where he is responsible for all quality assurance functions. Alcatel's Roanoke plant manufactures single mode optical fiber.

DAVID WATERS has been named vice president of Network Integrators in Salem. He joined the company in 1993 and became a certified network engineer that same year. The 11-year-old company, formerly known as Universal Fiber Optics, designs, installs and maintains computer network systems.

HOSPITALITY

STEPHEN E. PEELER has been promoted to corporate/government group sales manager at the Richmond Marriott hotel. He had been at the Roanoke Airport Marriott and has more than six years of hotel experience.

MANUFACTURING

PETER T. COE, president and chief executive officer of Aerial Machine and Tool Corp. in Vesta, WILLIAM E. GIESLER; president and chief executive officer of West Window Corp. in Martinsville; and ROY C. GIGNAC, founder and chairman of the board of Electronic Design and Sales in Danville, have been appointed by Gov. George Allen to the board of trustees of the A.L. Philpott Manufacturing Center in Martinsville. The purpose of the center is to help improve the productivity and performance of small and medium-size manufacturers in southern Virginia.

RANDY L. PRUITT has been named plant manager of Rusco Window Co. of Roanoke Inc. Pruitt has been with Rusco since 1980 and has held several supervisory positions.

JOHN MARX has been promoted to director of information resources at Tultex Corp. in Martinsville. In his new position, Marx is responsible for all information systems within Tultex. He joined the company in 1985 and has held several managerial positions. Most recently, he was manager of information resources. Before joining Tultex, Marx specialized in data processing with the U.S. Navy.

MEDIA

BILL GRUNDER has been appointed general manager of five of Vienna-based Virginia Network Inc.'s radio stations: WRDJ-FM and WJJS-FM in Roanoke, and WLDJ-FM, WJJX-FM and WVLR-AM in Lynchburg.
