KEYDETS END DROUGHT, TOP MOUNTAINEERS

Aaron Buss hit one of two free throws with 10 seconds remaining Saturday as VMI won against a Division I team for the first time this season, 89-85 over Appalachian State.

It was the Keydets' first Southern Conference victory of the season and snapped a 12-game losing streak. It also was VMI's first regular-season road victory since last year's win over Appalachian State, a string of 29 games.

VMI (3-12 overall, 1-4 Southern) led by 20 points in the second half before the Mountaineers (4-13, 1-4) rallied to cut the lead to 86-83 with 28 seconds remaining.

Brian Taueg hit a pair of free throws to increase VMI's lead to 88-83. Brian Hege's layup got the Mountaineers to 88-85 until Buss sealed the victory by hitting his free throw.

Appalachian's Tige Darner missed a 3-pointer with four seconds left, and the Keydets grabbed the rebound to run out the clock.

``The neatest thing about today is it wasn't one player,'' VMI coach Bart Bellairs said. ``Our guards did a good job getting the ball to our big people. We needed a complete game from everybody, and that's what we got today.''

VMI was led by Lawrence Gullette's 19 points. Former Lord Botetourt standout Bobby Prince added 17 points and Taueg 14 for the Keydets, who had 11 3-pointers.
