SO ?!!

Charles Smith, an artist and woodcarver who grew up near Waynesboro around the turn of the century, had a special fondness for animals. He combined that love with another - woodworking - and developed printmaking and oil painting into a process he called block painting. Smith described this process as painting with blocks instead of brushes.

Now, you have a chance to see some of Smith's work in person at "Charles Smith's Zoo," an exhibit of Smith's block paintings which opened recently at the Salem Museum. Developed by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the exhibit will continue through March 4.

The museum also will sponsor "BLOCK-ART," a workshop for children 12 and under, in which participants can make their own block paintings. It will be held March 4 from 2-3:30 p.m. The program is free, but space is limited. Call Mary Hill at 389-6760 to reserve a space.

Along with this exhibit, the museum has on display artwork collected from children during a recent mascot search for the Williams-Brown House in Salem. More than 100 entries were received. Winners will be announced Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. during a public reception at the museum.
