ADAMS, Vernon Elmer, 72, of Roanoke, died Saturday, January 28, 1995. He was retired from the U.S. Steel and Wells Fargo and a Veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Ruby H. Adams; son and daughter-in-law, Robert B. and Linda Adams; daughter and son-in-law, Verna A. and Richard Graham; grandchildren, Josanne and Kelly Graham; brothers, Carl Adams, and Algie Adams. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Michael Lee officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. ATKINS, Joseph Aaron, (``Joe""), 68, of Rocky Mount, died Saturday, January 28, 1995, at Eldercare of Franklin County. He was the son of the late James Robert and Nannie Trail Atkins, born March 1, 1926. BEAVER, Helen Wassum, 90, of Marion, died Saturday, January 28, 1995, at her home. She is survived by her husband, W. BOWMAN, Harold E. 81, of Route 1, Wirtz, died Friday, January 27, 1995, at the local hospital. He was a son of the late Elijah and Minnie Naff Bowman, and was preceded in death by a son, Harold E. Bowman Jr. Mr. Bowman was a long-time active member of Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren, and was employed by the Jack Garst Agency for thirty years. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Barnhart Bowman of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon B. and Tom Erbaugh, Mentor , Ohio; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark A. Bowman and Ellyn Axelrod, Danville, Calif., Joseph A. (Joe) and Betty B. Bowman, Richmond; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathleen and Luther Wray, Hettie and the Rev. David Webster, all of Callaway; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Rayford and Irene Bowman, W. Forrest Bowman, all of Callaway; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Germantown Brick Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Lucinda Barnum-Steggerda and the Rev. Sylvus Flora officiating. CARSON, Mary Aiken Stull, 86, of Buchanan , died Saturday, January 28, 1995. Mrs. Carson was a life long member of the Buchanan Presbyterian Church, a very active volunteer for many years with the American Red Cross Bloodmobile, member of the Buchanan Town Improvement Society, and an employee of Rader Funeral Home, Buchanan. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Henry Clay and Whilden Branch Carson, Dracut, Mass., John Stull and Dot Barger Carson, Buchanan; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Hirste C. and Rev. Gale D. Lammey, Spruce Pine, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; one nephew and five nieces. DAVIS, John Baxter, Jr. (``Skip""), 50, of Newport News, died Friday, January 27, 1995, at the Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, Va. Mr. Davis was born on July 1, 1944, in Rockbridge County, son of Helen Stinnett Davis and the late John Baxter Davis Sr. Mr. Davis was a heavy equipment operator with the Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company, with over thirty years service. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union, Local 8888. Surviving with his mother of Buena Vista, is his wife, Marlene Bailey Davis; daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Davis and Joseph Anthony Poplin; two sons, Scott Baxter Davis and Gregory Howard Davis; and grandson, Andrew Tyler Poplin, all of Newport News, Va.; one sister, Susan Davis Coffey of Buena Vista, Va. DECKER, Samuel Owen, 76, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 28, 1995. Mr. Decker was a Veteran of World War II. He retired from All Star Bowling Lanes in 1981 and was inducted into the Roanoke Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1992. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Christine Brightwell Decker; sons and daughter-in-law, Samuel ""Buddy"" and Bonnie Decker of Waynesboro, Dennis Decker of Roanoke; daughter, Marilyn Schuelke of Midlothian; six grandchildren, Michael Decker, Tracy Decker, Kip Decker, Shawn Decker, Kurt Schuelke, and Erin Schuelke; three sisters-in-law, Virginia Tinnell of Christiansburg, Hazel Wright of Roanoke, and Rosalie Lafferty of Waynesboro. DUNLAP, Patricia Reid, (``Pat""), of Lexington, died Saturday, 28, 1995. She was the wife of Thomas M. Dunlap, and a daughter of Robert Dale Reid and Anna Childress Reid of Danville. Born in Danville on February 15, 1933, Mrs. Dunlap was a registered nurse at Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Lexington over a period of thirty years. She was a member of New Monmouth Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband and parents, survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Janet McQueen of Harrisburg, N.C.; a son, Richard Dunlap of Roanoke; a sister, Mrs. Wayne Boyd of Newport News; a brother, Robert Reid of Fayetteville, N.C.; and three grandchildren. A graveside service, conducted by the Reverend Nancy S. GARDNER, Rev. Frederick L. 51, of 20920 Glenwood Ave., McKenney, died Sunday, January 29, 1995. He was a native of Hampton, and was the son of the late C. Randolph and Hilda Mae Munford Gardner Sr. He was a Minister for twenty years with the United Methodist Church Virginia Conference, serving in Patrick Co., Westmoreland Co., Bedford Co., Campbell Co, and McKenney. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie C. Gardner; daughter, Melanie Gardner of McKenney, Va. ; brother, C. Randolph Gardner Jr. of Christiansburg, Va.; aunt and uncle, Winifred and Dick Stetson of Hampton, Va.; nieces, Tamara Gardner of Mechanicsville, Va. and Sonya Gardner of Independence, Va.; and nephew, Joseph Gardner of Radford, Va. GIESEN, Charlotte Milton Caldwell, of Radford, died Saturday, January 28, 1995, at her residence. She was born to Charles Minor Caldwell and Ida Goodykoontz Caldwell on January 27, 1907, in Radford. She was the widow of Arthur R. Giesen also from Radford, whom she married in 1929. Her children are the Honorable A.R. ""Pete"" and Patricia Elliott Giesen Jr. of Waynesboro, and Ann Giesen Fowlkes of Radford. Mrs. Giesen, widely know as ""Pinkie"", was the women's editor for the Radford News Journal for a number of years, and Editor of the original Montgomery News Messenger. In 1954 she ran for the Radford City Council, leading the ticket of 10 candidates to become the first woman ever elected to this seat. In 1957 she became the first Republican woman elected to the Virginia State Legislature, holding her seat in the House of Delegates until 1962. She again was seated on Radford City Council from 1962 to 1966. She was a member of the Radford College Board of Visitors from 1970 to 1978, serving as Vice Rector of this board for three years. She was also a graduate of Radford State Teachers College, which enabled her to teach a number of years in the area. She was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church in Radford. She is survived by one brother and sister in-law, William A. and Zona Hassell Caldwell of Radford; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Giesen leaves eleven grandchildren, Michael D. and Kim Dickenson Fowlkes, Laguna Beach, Calif, Patrick G. and Melissa Fowlkes Farrell of Grass Valley, Calif, Gregory D. and Sean Fowlkes Jeung of Gleenwood Spring, Colo., Arthur R. ""Jay"" Giesen III of Pittsburgh, Pa., Jonathan H. and Nannie Grover Giesen of San Antonia, Texas, Russell B. and Ann Giesen Smith of Staunton, Elizabeth Giesen Ray of Falls Church, Tara Fowlkes Walker of Draper, David and M. HOLLYFIELD, Patricia Wolff, 67, of Marion, died Saturday, January 28, 1995, in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was the daughter of Hedevig H. Wolff of Silver Spring, Md., and the late Lyman H. Wolff and the granddaughter of the late Dr. Frank A. Wolff and Lillian J. Wolff. Dr. Wolff was one of the founders of the National Bureau of Standards. She grew up in Utah. Mrs. Hollyfield attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She was a student of oriental art and a great lover of art, music, nature and books. She founded a Multiple Sclerosis Outreach Group at Andrews Air Force Base in 1986 and led the group until 1992 when her health would no longer allow her to carry out her duties. She counseled many of the first diagnosed Multiple Sclerosis patients for the Washington Chapter of the national Multiple Sclerosis Society. She accompanied her husband while on duty with the USAF at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, Norfork, England and Washington, D.C. She is survived by her husband, Claude M. Hollyfield, Lt. Col. USAF Retired of Marion; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gale and Dexter Goodwin of Greer, S.C., Hedy and Dr. Arthur Weissinger, Raleigh, N.C., Elizabeth and Steve Miller, Lewes, Del.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Neil and Nancy Hollyfield, Marion, John and Lynn Hollyfield, and Jay Hollyfield all of Accokeek, Md.; her mother, Hedevig H. He was born January 13, 1903, in Carroll County the son of the late Amos Largen and Josephine Goad Largen. PUTNEY, Mabyl Turner, 88, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, January 28, 1995, at Camelot Hall Nursing Home. Born in Big Island, she was a daughter of the late Edgar Lee Turner and the late Sallie Downey Turner. She was a member of Sandusky Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one son, Irvin T. Putney. She is survived by four sons, W.K. Putney Jr. of Martinsville, Lacey E. Putney of Forest, Paul P. Putney of Big Island and Macon C. Putney of Bedford; one sister, Rachel T. Wilkins of Cincinnati, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Whitten Timberlake Chapel in Lynchburg by the Rev. Ralph Jackson. QUESENBERRY, Frelin Lynn, 59, of Galax, passed away Saturday, January 28, 1995, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home. He was born April 19, 1935 in Willis, the son of the Kinzer Quesenberry and Menta Taylor Quesenberry. Mr. Quesenberry was a formal employee of Wonder Knit & Vaughan Bassett of Galax. Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Harley and Vesta Quesenberry, Woodlawn; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Myrtle Quesenberry, Willis, Opal Worrell, Christiansburg, Ugie and Joe Poffel, Baltimore, Md., Sylvia and Claude Marshall, Christiansburg. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, at the Vaughan-Guynn-McGrady Chapel, Hillsville with the Rev. Carrico officiating. Interment will follow in the Quesenberry Cemetery. ROBERTSON, Robert Warren Sr., 79, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, January 28, 1995, in a local hospital. He was a retired auto dealer in Roanoke and served in the Armed Forces during World War II. He is survived by one son, Robert W. Robertson Jr., Roanoke; a daughter, Kathleen R. Pendleton, Roanoke; one sister, Margaret Catron, Fort Worth, Texas; also four grandchildren, Sarah E. Pendleton, Christopher Pendleton, Robert W. Robertson III, and Julia Katie Robertson. The family will receive friends from 1 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Lotz Vinton Chapel. WHITE, Velma Calton, 60, of Salem, died Saturday, January 28, 1995, at her home. She was retired from Veterans Administration, Roanoke. She was a native of Lee County and resided in Roanoke for about 34 years. She was a member of Ely's Memorial United Methodist Church in Dryden. She was preceded in death by her mother, Maxie Cox Calton; and one sister, Betty Calton Williams. Surviving include her husband, John E. White, Salem; father, Lloyd Calton, Dryden; stepsons, Jack White and Jimmy White both of Roanoke; brothers, Cecil Calton, Pennington Gap; sisters, Jean Pearson, Roanoke, Brenda Wiley, Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews.
