The Appalachian Regional Commission recently asked seventh- and eighth-graders from Floyd, Giles and Pulaski counties to imagine their communities in 2005 and to record and share these images in its national poster contest.
JOE HAGA and HOWARD MARTIN, seventh-graders at Pulaski Middle School, submitted the winning poster. The entry, ``Highways to the Future,'' has been sent to Richmond for the state competition.
The second-place poster was submitted by LAURA BOND and AMANDA DULANEY, sixth-graders at Floyd County's Indian Valley Elementary School.
Two other posters were submitted from Pulaski Middle School and also received awards. Recognition went to Paige Lawrence, Kristen Richards, Laura Westmoreland, Kenneth Meadows, Joey Richardson and Brad Shelton. They all are in the seventh grade.
The Appalachian Regional Commission is a partnership between the federal government and the 13 states defined as Appalachia. In the New River Valley, the ARC local development district includes Floyd, Pulaski and Giles counties.
The winner of the state poster contest will compete at the national level. Winners from the 13-state competition will receive grants for educational supplies for their schools.
The Christiansburg High School Drama Department recently selected cast members for the upcoming performances of Sandy Wilson's ``THE BOY FRIEND,'' scheduled for April 21-23.
Monica Shelor and Brandon Miller will play Polly and Tony; Leslie Cosgriff and Timothy Treadway will play Maisie and Bobby.
Other cast members are Preston Caldwell, Kate deRosset, Andrew Dickenson, Alison Flora, Sidney Hollandsworth, Gabriel Hudson, Matthew Lucas, Angela Mills, Timothy Nelson and Maegan Simpson.
Charlena La Luz is the director. The production crew also includes Charlotte Smith, musical director; Pat Horne, choreographer; and Megan Simpson, student director.

The Radford High School Prom Steering Committee needs financial assistance for its annual AFTER-PROM PARTY to be held May 13, midnight-5:30 a.m, Peters Hall, Radford University.
The committee's goal is to provide a fun, alcohol- and drug-free atmosphere for an after-prom celebration so no student is involved in an incident of drug use or drunken driving.
The student admission fee is $5, which does not cover all party expenses.

Christiansburg Elementary School recently announced the winners in its school-level REFLECTIONS competition.
Reflections is a cultural arts program sponsored by the National Parent-Teacher Association that encourages creative expression in elementary, middle and high school students.
The winners are Mary Curry, Ashley Floyd and Jennie Crate in the music category; Jenny Crate, Daniele Obenshain, K.J. Levine, Matthew Cook and David Ayers in the visual arts category; Jason Hosner, Joshua Akers and Tyler Myers in photography; and Hillary Levine, Jessica Miller and Kristen Brugh in literature.
New River Community College will offer a Scholastic Achievement Test PREPARATION COURSE Saturdays, 9 a.m.- noon, Feb. 11-March 18, 102 Godbey Hall, Dublin campus.
Instructors Wayne Wooten and Veda Boyd will explain test topics and provide hints, tips and shortcuts to help students solve problems more quickly.
The course fee is $65, not including textbook.

The joint committee on education of the Christiansburg-Montgomery County and the Greater Blacksburg chambers of commerce seeks nominations for its annual EDUCATIONAL AWARDS program that recognizes outstanding contributions to education in the Montgomery County school system.
The Award for Excellence in Education honors outstanding teachers, administrators and support staff. The Business-Industry Award recognizes educational contributions by the commercial sector of the community.
Nomination forms are available at the chamber offices or at the School Board personnel office. The completed forms must be returned by Feb. 10.
