MAN GUILTY OF TAKING LIBERTIES

A Salem man pleaded guilty in Salem Circuit Court on Monday to two counts of taking indecent liberties with children. Police had charged that he fondled and sodomized two boys who agreed to have sex with him as part of a robbery scheme.

According to Commonwealth's Attorney Fred King, the defendent, William Scott Lee, 30, was approached by two boys in Highland Park in Old Southwest Roanoke on Aug.19. The boys offered to perform sexual acts with Lee in exchange for $20.

King said the boys, ages 13 and 14, told police they never intended to go through with the sexual acts. Instead, they planned to rob Lee and use the money for pizza and cigarettes, King said, reading from a statement he gave in court.

The boys eventually got into Lee's car; on the way to Lee's home on Ada Lane in Salem, Lee fondled both boys, King said. When they reached Lee's house, the boys got undressed, planning to knock Lee unconscious and leave with his money, the prosecutor said.

When the boys saw a gun, which Lee told them was loaded, they became afraid, King said.

As one of the boys tried to get dressed, Lee attempted to perform oral sex on him, but the boy escaped and ran to a nearby convenience store, King said. He said Lee started to molest the second victim before he, too, got away.

One of the boys called the police. When officers arrived, the boys said they were abducted from Highland Park at gunpoint, but later admitted they went willingly, King said.

Police charged Lee with sodomy and one count of taking indecent liberties with a child, but King decided to prosecute on lesser charges.

``Based upon the victims' own criminality, I decided instead of placing the sodomy charge to place two indecent liberties charges,'' King said. ``They weren't totally innocent themselves.''

Lee faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for the two charges. He will be sentenced April 17 in Salem Circuit Court.
