CAVS' PALMER GARNERS ACC ACCOLADES

Virginia's Wendy Palmer and Duke's Alison Day were named the Atlantic Coast Conference women basketball players of the week.

Palmer, a junior forward, averaged 25.5 points as the 12th-ranked Cavaliers remained undefeated in the ACC with an 82-48 win over Maryland and a 78-55 win over Clemson. Against the Terrapins, she set school records with 39 points and 18 field goals.

In other sports news in the region:

Virginia Tech sophomore Martha Peck qualified for the Zone Diving Championships to be held in Lexington, Ky., March 9-11. She is the first Tech diver to qualify for zone competition since 1990, when Kelly-Ayn McKay was a Metro Conference finalist and went to the NCAA Championship.

Peck scored 263.75 points in one-meter competition against West Virginia on Jan. 21 to qualify, then qualified in the three-meter competition by scoring 257.77 points during the Hokies' win over Old Dominion this past weekend. The national standards are 245 points for one-meter and 255 for three-meter.
