The lines will go from the Newbern Elementary School area to the park, serving residents along the way. The project is funded by a loan from Rural Economic & Community Development (formerly the Farmers Home Administration) and a $173,000 contribution from the state parks system from money made available in a bond issue.
The project will include a 90-foot, 131,000-gallon water tank on Lyons Road (Virginia 662), where the new line will join existing lines; 24 fire hydrants; 13,506 feet of 12-inch line, 3,225 feet of 10-inch line and 6,610 feet of eight-inch line.
H.T. Bowling of Radford is the contractor for the water line. The $125,100 tank will be built by Industrial Welding of Atkins.
The state park's water now comes from wells, which have failed on some occasions such as Labor Day weekend when the park sees much use.
County Engineer Ron Coake will oversee it. A second project is being considered to extend sewer lines to the same area.
Supervisor Pete Crawford said the water project is part of an ongoing county effort to provide healthy potable water to all county residents, as well as helping the park continue to be a major asset to county recreation.
