SUPERVISORS CALL SPECIAL MEETING ON LANDFILL MANAGEMENT

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting today to discuss how the pending change in management at the Mid-County Landfill will affect employees.

Most of the meeting will be held behind closed doors, under a section of state law that allows the exclusion of discussion of personnel matters from the public eye.

The meeting begins at 7 tonight on the third floor of the Montgomery County Courthouse in Christiansburg.

On July 1, the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority will take over operation of Montgomery's landfill and recycling operations. The county, Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Virginia Tech formed the authority last month. Eventually, the Montgomery authority hopes to join the New River Resource Authority in its plan for a new landfill in Pulaski County.

Approximately 20 current county employees will be affected in the change, which has raised questions about job duties, seniority, pensions and other issues.
