MONTGOMERY SEEKS PAIR IN BACKHOE THEFT|

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is searching for two men who made off with a $24,000 backhoe after providing stolen identification to rent it.

Two men rented a MiniGiant excavator from Equipment Supply on Radford Road just outside Christiansburg on Jan. 12, said Investigator Ron Hamlin.

The men said they had no hauling equipment and asked that the excavator be delivered to Mount Tabor Church on Walton Road, Hamlin said.

The store reported the equipment as stolen on Jan. 16 when it was not returned as promised.

Deputies learned that someone saw the equipment being loaded in a U-Haul or similar moving vehicle, which then left the area, Hamlin said.

Investigators learned that the two men had used a Pocahontas, W.Va., man's driver's license as identification when they rented the equipment. The West Virginia man told authorities he had lost the license a few weeks ago while shopping in Christiansburg, Hamlin said.

Anyone with information may call Hamlin at 382-6911 or 382-2951.
