JAMES RIVER UPSETS PARRY MCCLUER 59-56

Shahan Burrell scored 16 points and Curtis Nolan added 14 for James River, which battled back for a 59-56 upset victory over Parry McCluer in a Pioneer District boys' game Tuesday night.

Mike McElroy scored 10 of his team-high 22 points for Parry McCluer (12-6 overall, 5-4 district) in a blistering first half. The Fighting Blues, ranked 10th in the sportswriters' Group A poll, outscored the Knights 27-14 in the opening quarter. James River closed to 34-32 by halftime.

The Knights (6-8, 3-4) pulled away with an 11-5 run in the third quarter. Chris Firebaugh added 12 points and Brian Shorter 11 for James River.

Brandon Garrett had 14 points for the Blues.

The Celtics scored 27 points in the fourth quarter, including a 13-of-15 performance from the free-throw line, to earn a Virginia Independent Conference victory over the Eagles.

Mark Arbogast made a 3-pointer with five seconds left to cut Roanoke Valley Christian's deficit to two points. Roanoke Catholic added a point at the free-throw line to go ahead by three, and Arbogast's final attempt at the buzzer rimmed out.

Tony Joyce led the Celtics (6-11, 5-5) with 27 points, including 13 in the fourth quarter. Rod Tasco and P.L. Bratton added 14 points each and Brendan McCarthy had 10.

Simon Foster led the Eagles (9-7, 4-4) with 19 points and Arbogast finished with 14. Richard Booth, who had seven assists, and Joel Nester also scored 14 points each for Roanoke Valley Christian.

The Celtics used strong rebounding to help defeat the Eagles in a Blue Ridge Conference game.

Roanoke Catholic converted on its 19 offensive rebounds, compared to three by Roanoke Valley Christian.

Abby Dickson, who had 11 offensive rebounds, scored a game-high 20 points for Roanoke Catholic (11-6, 10-2). Dickson finished the game with 17 rebounds.

Gina Gutherie led the Eagles (10-4, 4-3) with 10 points.
