MARTINSVILLE WINS PIEDMONT DUEL WITH LAUREL PARK

Laurel Park had two chances in the final seven seconds to force an overtime, but missed both shots and Martinsville held on for a 58-56 victory Tuesday night in Piedmont District boys' action.

Mike Martin led the Bulldogs (12-4 overall, 12-2 district) with a game-high 18 points in the battle of crosstown rivals. Carlos Martin tossed in 12 points for Martinsville and Manti Venable added 10. The Bulldogs are ranked eighth in Group AA.

Warrick Scott led the Lancers (10-5, 10-3) with 12 points and Darrell Wilson added 11.

NARROWS - Even an 18-point halftime deficit couldn't keep the Green Wave from pulling off a major upset.

The Green Wave roared back after trailing 48-30 to knock off the Blue Devils, the fourth-ranked team in the state Group A poll, in the Mountain Empire District.

Narrows (8-6, 2-2) went to man-to-man defense in the second half and took the lead by outscoring Grayson County 25-4 in the third quarter.

The Blue Devils' leading scorer, Brian Boyer, scored 16 points in the first half - 13 in the second quarter - but made only one field goal in the second half before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter.

Scott Stafford scored only two points for Narrows, but his free throws with eight seconds remaining iced the victory. Patrick Bailey scored 17 of his game-high 27 points in the second half and picked off four Grayson County passes. Brian Pruett added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Green Wave, and Scott Vaught finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Russ Lambert and Chad Shaffner each led Grayson County (11-3, 3-1) with 14 points.

BUENA VISTA - Shahan Burrell scored 16 points and Curtis Nolan added 14 for the Knights, who battled back for an upset victory over the Fighting Blues in the Pioneer District.

Mike McElroy scored 10 of his team-high 22 points for Parry McCluer (12-6, 5-4) in a blistering first half. The Blues, ranked 10th in Group A, outscored the Knights 27-14 in the opening quarter, but James River cut it to 34-32 by halftime.

The Knights (6-8, 3-4) pulled away with an 11-5 run in the third quarter. Chris Firebaugh scored 12 and Brian Shorter added 11.

Brandon Garrett had 14 points for the Blues.

The Spartans (8-6, 4-1) used a 10-0 run in the third quarter to turn a one-point deficit into a nine-point lead and dispatched the Mountaineers in a Blue Ridge District game.

Visiting Alleghany (8-6, 1-4) turned over the ball four times in the spurt and was victimized by three steals by Salem freshman Herschel Thomas.

The Spartans (8-6, 4-1), who outscored the Mountaineers 22-15 in the third quarter, got 23 points from Thomas and 22 from Chad Pendleton. Kevin Garst added 11 points.

Alleghany was led by Dusty Roland with 14 points. James ``Woo'' Hughes and Rashad Worth added 13 each.

Kelly DeHart led Rocky Gap (8-5, 2-1) in the final period, scoring eight of his game-high 17 points. Eric Faulkner scored all six of his points in the fourth quarter. Will Dodson and Tracy Bradshaw added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Eagles.

Jeff Ross led Galax (6-7, 0-4) with 14 points and Tito Crockett added 10.

Jody Burnett led the Pioneers with 16 points, Kenneth Stoots added 13 and T.J. King 12.

Bland (6-7, 1-3) was paced by David Lambert with 24 points, including four 3-pointers. Shannon Havens added 21 points.

MONTEREY - Kris Phillips scored 12 of his 25 points in the last four minutes as the Chargers repelled an upset bid by the Rams in the Pioneer District.

Highland (5-8, 1-6) trailed 38-24 at halftime, but outscored Bath County 17-4 in the third period.

T.J. Honaker sank a 3-pointer with 4:43 left to give the Rams a 50-47 lead, but Phillips responded with two 3-pointers in one minute as the Chargers (10-4, 5-2) pulled away.

After two free throws by Jon Rodgers, Phillips iced the victory with a field goal and four free throws in the last 44 seconds.
