NARROWS STUNS NO. 4-RANKED GRAYSON COUNTY

Narrows battled back from an 18-point halftime deficit to stun Grayson County, the No.4-ranked team in the Group A poll, 74-70 on Tuesday night in a Mountain Empire District boys' game.

Brian Boyer helped the Blue Devils take a 48-30 halftime lead. He scored 16 of his 18 points in the first half, including 13 in the second quarter.

Narrows' man-to-man defense stepped up after halftime, enabling the Green Wave (8-6 overall, 2-2 district) to hold the Blue Devils (11-3, 3-1) to four points in the third quarter.

The game remained close in the fourth quarter before Scott Stafford hit two free throws - his only points of the night - with eight seconds remaining to ice the Narrows victory.

Patrick Bailey, Brian Pruett and Scott Vaught helped rally the Green Wave in the second half. Bailey scored 17 of his game high 27 points after intermission and finished with four steals. Pruett had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Vaught added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Russ Lambert and Chad Shaffner added 14 points each for Grayson County.

ROCKY GAP - The Eagles pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Maroon Tide by 13 points to keep Galax winless in the Mountain Empire District.

Kelly DeHart led Rocky Gap (8-5, 2-1) in the final period, scoring eight of his game-high 17 points. Eric Faulkner scored all six of his points in the fourth quarter. Will Dodson and Tracy Bradshaw added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Eagles.

Jeff Ross led Galax (6-7, 0-4) with 14 points and Tito Crockett added 10.

BLAND - The Pioneers took advantage of 44 trips to the free-throw line and defeated the Rockets in a Mountain Empire District game.

Fort Chiswell (9-5, 4-1) was 29-of-44 from the line; Bland made 21 of 26 attempts.

Jody Burnett led the Pioneers with 16 points, Kenneth Stoots added 13 and T.J. King 12.

Bland (6-7, 1-3) was paced by David Lambert with 24 points, including four 3-pointers. Shannon Havens added 21 points.

With 11 points, Brian Leeman was Marion's only double-digit scorer.
