The Virginia House of Delegates Corporations, Insurance and Banking Committee sent the local telephone service competition bill to the House floor Tuesday.
The measure would reverse a 45-year-old prohibition against more than one company providing local phone service in a given territory.
Among those wanting to get into the business is the cable television industry. Conversely, local phone companies are preparing to sell cable television programming to residential customers in some metropolitan areas.
The committee approved the bill after a compromise was worked out over the weekend among local phone companies, potential competitors and consumer activists.
``Hopefully, the result down the road will be that consumers will have more choices and pay lower prices,'' said Jean Ann Fox, president of the Virginia Citizens Consumer Council.
