Benefit line dance

New River Valley residents will have the opportunity to put themselves in the record books Saturday - and help out a neighbor.

The New River Valley Mall and WPSK will try to set a world record for line dancing at the mall Saturday at 4:30 p.m. A $5 donation will be requested of participants. The money will benefit Karen Board, a Blacksburg resident who is fighting cancer and needs a $100,000 bone marrow transplant.

The record for line dancing is 30,000 people, said Tammy Poston, marketing director for the mall. She isn't sure how many people will show up, but she and the radio station have challenged area business and organizations to see how many participants they can provide.

Instructors and coordinators will be on hand to help dancing-impaired record-breakers. Trophies and door prizes will be awarded.

"You're supposed to bring as many people as you can," Poston said.

What about bringing a date?

"You can bring 10 dates," she said.

The event had been originally set for Jan. 28, but was rescheduled because of that weekend's snow storm.

New River friends

Friends of the New River will meet Feb. 7 for a presentation on the New River Trail State Park. Participants can sign up for cleanup crews, recreation and safety training, publicity, conservation and environmental protection, and fund-raising.

Everyone is invited. For more information, call 552-2633.
