CAVALIERS WITHSTAND WILDCAT RALLY

Shannon Williams scored 17 points as Lord Botetourt almost blew an 18-point lead before holding on to beat Rockbridge County 56-50 in a Blue Ridge District boys' game Wednesday night.

The Wildcats (0-15 overall, 0-5 Blue Ridge) cut the lead to three late in the fourth quarter behind Ricky Wright, who scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth period.

The Wildcats had a chance to tie, but missed a 3-pointer. Williams hit two free throws and Ryan Salvi added a free throw to seal it for the Cavaliers (9-6, 3-5). Salvi finished with 15 points and Lee King grabbed 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers.

Pulaski County 62

Blacksburg 42

DUBLIN - Eric Webb scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds and had seven steals as the Cougars pounded the Indians in a non-district matchup.

Blacksburg got off to a good start, shooting 62 percent from the field in the first half, but trailed 34-33. Pulaski County took over in the second half, outrebounding Blacksburg 19-12 and holding the Indians to 24 percent field-goal shooting.

Webb was 6-for-9 from the field as the Cougars made 53.3 percent of their field goal attempts. Tyrone Hash had 14 points for Pulaski County.

Anthony Wheeler led the Indians with 11 points.

Cave Spring 82

Franklin County 59

ROCKY MOUNT - The Knights used a huge second half run to bolt past the Eagles in a Roanoke Valley District game.

Cave Spring led 56-53 in the second half before going on a 27-6 run to put away the game. The Knights' inside tandem of Jaclyn Banks and Cheryl Rhodes combined to score 41 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter.

Rhodes finished with a game-high 21 points and Banks added 20 for Cave Spring. Aimee Beightol added 12 points and 10 assists, giving her 503 assists for her career.

Franklin County (7-6, 3-5) were led by Sandy Hudson, who scored 19, and Betty Smith , who added 12. Freshman Natasha Williams, playing in her first varsity game, scored 11 points and had eight rebounds.

The Eagles played without Natalie Giles, who was serving a one-game suspension, and Patty Campbell, who will not play for the rest of the year for personal reasons.
