BREEDLOVE POWERS FERRUM

Ferrum's John Breedlove was honored before Wednesday night's Dixie Conference basketball men's game against Averett for becoming the eighth player in Panthers history to score 1,000 points in a career.

The former Tunstall High School standout then added 29 to increase his total to 1,059 and help the Panthers pound the Cougars 113-93 at Ferrum.

Breedlove, a senior forward, also had 18 rebounds and seven assists.

Ferrum tied the school record for 3-pointers in a game, converting on 13 of 24 attempts. Kevin Keatts was 7-of-9 on 3-point attempts and finished with 26 points.

The Panthers also got 19 points from senior center Albert Hobbs and 18 from Marcus Toney, a freshman from Magna Vista High School who made four 3-point attempts. Junior guard Paul Rivera added nine assists and three steals.

Both teams shot 61 percent from the field in the first half. Ferrum was 25-of-41, and Averett made 20 of 33 attempts.

Ferrum (9-10 overall, 5-3 Dixie) led 69-53 at halftime and 92-68 midway through the second half.

Sophomore guard Mike Phifer led Averett (3-15, 0-7) with 36 points.

Women

Ferrum 92, Averett 49: Kia Williams scored a career-high 40 points, and the Panthers used a second-half surge to fry the Cougars in a Dixie Conference game.

Williams, a junior forward, took advantage of a porous Averett defense and got most of her points off transition layups. Williams was 14-of-22 from the field and 12-of-15 from the free-throw line. She also added 10 rebounds and five steals.

Sophomore Glossary Smith had her 13th double-double of the season and 10th in the last 11 games with 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Panthers. Senior center Tamiko Martin added 10 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. Martin has 112 blocks this season.

The Cougars (6-11, 1-5) kept it close in the first half, trailing by six points late and 38-30 at halftime. But the Panthers (11-7, 5-2) opened the second half with a 36-9 run to blow away Averett. Williams and Smith each scored 13 in the run.

Six of Ferrum's second-half points came on technical foul shots. Kathy Bocock, Averett's coach, was slapped with three technicals in the second half and was ejected.
