THE VIRGINIA COMMISSION FOR THE ARTS has selected several Roanoke Valley teachers to receive money under its 1994-95 Teacher Incentive Grant Program.

The teachers, among 118 statewide, were recognized for having the best in creative and innovative classroom projects that integrate the arts into the basic curriculum.

Roanoke Valley teachers who received this grant are: Katherine Bowman, Elizabeth M. Bursey, Sheryl P. Vaden, and Jinny Wooddall-Gainey, all from Community School; Rose Ann Burgess from Montery Elementary School; Vivian Gobble from Herman L. Horn Elementary School; and Susan C. Mele from W.E. Cundiff Elementary School.

MARY K. DOWE has won the first Robert L.A. Keeley Scholarship in Respiratory Education.

The $2,500 award was established by the Virginia Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Foundation. Established in 1929, the foundation provides TB research and patient support.

Dowe is a single parent with two children, works full time at the hospital and maintains a 4.0 grade point average as a full- time student in the respiratory care program at the hospital's College of Health Sciences.

Keeley, a Roanoke doctor, has been president of the Virginia Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Foundation since 1975. In 1991, he was awarded the Medical Society of Virginia's Community Service Award.

Keeley is graduate of the University of Virginia Medical School and a board certified physician in general and thoracic surgery.

BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE recently named several Roanoke-area students to the dean's list for the fall term. They were: Michael David Baker, son of John and Dianne Baker of Buchanan; Michelle Rena Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Brown of Roanoke; Dale LeRoy Foster Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Foster of Salem; Kelly Rebecca Honeycutt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Honeycutt of Blue Ridge; Marcia Rae Mundy, daughter of Charles and Nancy Mundy of Buchanan; and Christie Leigh Osborne, daughter of Gary and Carol Osborne of Daleville, who finished with a 4.0 grade-point average.

JIMMY J. ARTHUR JR., son of Jimmy and Nona Arthur of Hollins, has been named to the dean's list at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga., for the fall semester of the 1994-95 academic year. Arthur is a 1992 graduate of Northside High School.

TIFFANY P. HOBACK of Roanoke was among the students named to the 1994 fall semester honor roll at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo.

WILLIAM BYRD HIGH SCHOOL, has announced its place in the Reflections Contest winners. They are for literature: Gretchen Dress, first place; Omeed Dariani, second; and Amanda Pickering, third place. THE OPTIMIST CLUB has announced the winners in its annual essay contest. They are: Vassiliki Farmakis, first place, Fleming-Ruffner Magnet Center; Mark Finney, second, Patrick Henry High School; Catherine Higgins, third, Northside High School.

The winning entry will be submitted to the Optimist District competition in Virginia Beach. The winner of the district competition will be awarded an expense-paid trip to the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pa. for a four-day conference on freedom and leadership.

REGINALD SHAREEF of Roanoke has been named in the third 1994 edition of ``Who's Who Among American Teachers.'' He is an associate professor of politicial science at Radford University.

ROBERT C. BURDICK JR., son of Bob Burdick of Roanoke, recently graduated from Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., with a degree in business administration. Burdick also made the fall 1994 dean's list.

DENA CASSESE, an occupational therapy assistant student from the College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, has received the Rehabilitation Associates, P.C.'s first annual affiliation scholarship. Rehabilitation Associates, P.C. is a Virginia Beach and Richmond-based occupation and physical therapy practice specializing in pediatric and school-based therapy.

Perrin achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester.

Perrin achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester.

MAURICE S. FISHER Sr. son of William and Audrey Fisher of Troutville, has earned a doctorate degree in social policy and social work from Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Social Work. Fisher, a graduate of Lord Botetourt, received his undergradute degree from Roanoke College and his masters from VCU.

HO THIEN NGUYEN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hong Duc Nguyen of Roanoke, has been named to the dean's list at Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C.

Nguyen is a 1994 graduate of William Fleming High School.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY listed three Roanokers among the nearly 80 students named to ``Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.''

KELLY DIERKER, a junior majoring in English, has been named to the dean's list for the 1994 fall session at Preiffer College in Misenheimer, N.C.
