MARY K. DOWE has won the first Robert L.A. Keeley Scholarship in Respiratory Education.

The $2,500 award was established by the Virginia Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Foundation. Established in 1929, the foundation provides TB research and patient support.

Dowe is a single parent with two children, works full time at the hospital and maintains a 4.0 grade point average as a full- time student in the respiratory care program at the hospital's College of Health Sciences.

Keeley, a Roanoke doctor, has been president of the Virginia Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Foundation since 1975. In 1991, he was awarded the Medical Society of Virginia's Community Service Award.

Keeley is graduate of the University of Virginia Medical School and a board certified physician in general and thoracic surgery.

DANIEL JOHNSON, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Johnson Jr. of Roanoke, was named to the fall semester dean's list at Bryan College in Dayton, Tenn, where he's a junior.

THE OPTIMIST CLUB has announced the winners in its annual essay contest. They are: Vassiliki Farmakis, first place, Fleming-Ruffner Magnet Center; Mark Finney, second, Patrick Henry High School; Catherine Higgins, third, Northside High School.

The winning entry will be submitted to the Optimist District competition in Virginia Beach. The winner of the district competition will be awarded an expense-paid trip to the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, Pa. for a four-day conference on freedom and leadership.

CHRISTOPHER G. JARVIS, son of Thomas R. and Betty Jarvis of Vinton, recently graduated from Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, N.C.

Jarvis earned a bachelor of science degree in biology.

ROBERT C. BURDICK JR., son of Bob Burdick of Roanoke, recently graduated from Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., with a degree in business administration. Burdick also made the fall 1994 dean's list.

DENA CASSESE, an occupational therapy assistant student from the College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, has received the Rehabilitation Associates, P.C.'s first annual affiliation scholarship. Rehabilitation Associates, P.C. is a Virginia Beach and Richmond-based occupation and physical therapy practice specializing in pediatric and school-based therapy.

LONGWOOD COLLEGE has announced the names of its midyear graduates from the Roanoke Valley. They are: Penny Marie Argabright, Roanoke, social work; Donnie Eugene Martin Jr., Roanoke, business administration; Sharon Renee Patterson, Roanoke, sociology; Dennis C. DAVID SAMUEL PERRIN, Roanoke, has been named to president's honor roll for the 1994 fall semester at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo.

Perrin achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the semester.

AVERETT COLLEGE has announced the names of Roanoke Valley students who graduated in December.

Those from Roanoke are: Helen Jackson Lovern, bachelor of business administration, and Gary Wayne Kirby, bachelor of science in human resource development; both magna cum laude; Victoria Ann Ainsworth-Ray, James Franklin Armstrong, Joyce Hickman Hamm, Linda Sue Lawrence, Susan Renee Pollard and Robert Matthe Poole, all earning bachelor of business administration degrees; and Paul Douglass Beekman, Phillip Allan Bocchieri, Linwood Keith Brandis, Raymond Gilliam Cobb, Kevin John Delaney, Robert Elmore Evans and Jack Lee Wood, all earning masters of business administration degrees.

Bachelor of business administration graduates from Salem are: Brenda Louise Cole and Michael Anthony Gagnet.

Ralph Lewis Hayslett III of Troutville also earned a business administration degree.

MAURICE S. FISHER SR. son of William and Audrey Fisher of Troutville, has earned a doctorate degree in social policy and social work from Virginia Commonwealth University's School of Social Work. Fisher, a graduate of Lord Botetourt High School, received his undergradute degree from Roanoke College and his masters from VCU.

CADET BRANDON R. CORNETT, son of Joyce and Jim Cornett, was among 40 Virginia Military Institute students recently named to the 1995 edition of ``Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.''

Cornett is a senior history major and a graduate of Cave Spring High School. He is president of the Spanish Honor Society, treasurer of Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Company Commander, a member of the Rat Disciplinary Committee and the powerlifting team.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY listed three Roanokers among the nearly 80 students named to ``Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.''

The students from Roanoke and their majors are: Erin Doyle, English; Jill M. McFadden, chemistry; and Ashley N. Thompson, premdical studies.

KELLY DIERKER, a junior majoring in English, has been named to the dean's list for the 1994 fall session at Preiffer College in Misenheimer, N.C.

Dierker is the daughter of Judith and Richard Dierker of Roanoke.
