Northwest organization gets grant for houses

The Northwest Neighborhood Environmental Organization has received $75,000 from John Heinz Neighborhood Development Program through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The organization will use the money to construct two new houses in the 800 and 900 blocks of Loudon Avenue. This is the third such grant the organization has received since 1989. The organization has a year to raise $19,000 in matching funds.

Botetourt man gets Lions Club's top honor

C. Ural Manuel of Botetourt County has been named a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions Clubs International Foundation.

The fellowship, which is named for the founder of Lions Clubs International, is the foundation's highest honor and is given in recognition of humanitarian service.

Manuel has been a member of the Roanoke Villa Heights Lions Club for 15 years and has held numerous Lions Club offices, including president and deputy district governor.
