NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT BRADFORD C. WARD, son of Robert and Nellie Ward of Fincastle, recently completed basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

Ward is a 1994 graduate of James River High School.

PETTY OFFICER 1ST CLASS DONALD W. PARKER, formerly of Roanoke, has returned home to San Diego from a six-month stint to the Indian and western Pacific oceans and the Persian Gulf with the dock landing ship USS Fort McHenry.

Parker was involved in providing humanitarian assistance to Rwanda, where the ship transferred food and supplies to the troubled region.

In the Persian Gulf, Parker joined other naval forces that had been working in support of the "no-fly zone" over southern Iraq.

Parker is a 1980 graduate of William Fleming Senior High School.

LANCE CPL. LARRY M. WORRELL and SGT. DENNIS S. WILEY have been serving off the coast of Bosnia-Herzegovina with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit, embarked with the USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group.

Worrell, son of Larry and Priscilla Worrell of Roanoke, is a 1991 graduate of William Byrd High School.

Wiley is the son of Harvey Barbour of Roanoke.

MARINE PVT. MATTHEW A. COTY, son of Joseph and Leslie Coty of Roanoke, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

MARINE PVT. JOHN H. HENDRICKS, son of Melvin and Betty Rock of Roanoke, recently completed recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is a 1993 graduate of Northside High School.

PETTY OFFICER THIRD CLASS AVERY W. CRAIN, son of Cliff C. and Christine R. Crain of Buchanan, has been serving off the coast of Bosnia-Herzegovina with the assault ship USS Nassau.

Crain is a 1986 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

PETTY OFFICER THIRD CLASS ORAL S. AYTON, son of Rodulph and Mineth A. Ayton of 4409 Oleva St., Roanoke, is currently serving a six-month deployment to the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Reid, which is supporting international sanctions against Iraq.

Ayton is a 1991 graduate of William Fleming High School.

NAVY SEAMAN RECRUIT JULIE C. STONEBURNER, daughter of Dennis and Karen Stoneburner of Roanoke, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill. She is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

THE VIRGINIA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD has awarded the Army Achievement Medal to a Roanoke resident and announced the promotions of three others.

Sgt. First Class Theodore Yates received the medal for outstanding performance and service; and Kevin M. Campbell, Stephen L. Lee and Russell Lowry were promoted to the rank of sergeant.

THE FOOD SERVICE SECTION of the Virginia National Guard's Headquarters Company, First Battalion, 116th Infantry has received the Philip A. Connelly Award for excellence in food preparation.

Sgt. First Class Larry Woods led crew that includes Sgts. Dennis Ayers, Gregory Mason, James Patterson and Jimmy Phillips, Specialist Michael Embry, Privates First Class Johnny Browing and Mark Saunders, and Private Peter Fenerty.

The team received a gold trophy, and individuals received silver medallions in the annual competition by food service units throughout the Army.

AIRMAN APPRENTICE CHRISTOPHER M. BRADLEY, son of Tommy C. and Patricia S. Bradley of Roanoke, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

He is a 1993 graduate of Northside High School.

FIREMAN RECRUIT JOSHUA A. GRAY, son of Gregory I. Gray of Buchanan and Linda F. Hickman of Elliston, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Orlando, Fla.

He is a 1994 graduate of James River High School.

SEAMAN RECRUIT JEFFREY D. WIMMER, son of Justin D. and Debbie M. Wimmer of Roanoke, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

He is a 1994 graduate of William Fleming High School.

AIRMAN TIMOTHY J. KIZER, son of Dan J. and Susan E. Kizer of Vinton, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

He is a 1994 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School.

CPL. TREVOR S. DEMPSEY, son of Richard S. and Norma B. Dempsey of Craig Robertson Road, recently received a certificate of commendation.

Dempsey was cited for superior performance of duty while assigned with Weapons Training Battalion at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Camp Pendleton, Calif.

He is a 1991 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

LANCE CPL. JAMES A. HALL, son of Robert J. and Frances L. Hall of Salem, recently was promoted to his present rank while serving in the Marine Corps Detachment, Defense Language Institute in Presidio of Monterey, Calif.

He is a 1992 graduate of William Fleming High School.
