POST-HOLIDAY DISCOUNTS BOOST SALES FOR JANUARY

U.S. retailers saw generally firm sales in January but analysts said the results were bolstered by heavy discounting in after-Christmas sales.

Michael Niemira, economist at Mitsubishi Bank in New York, said January sales were good, but he was unsure whether they were a good predictorr of spring trends.
