NORTH CROSS SHOOTS PAST HIGHLANDERS

North Cross made 23 of 31 free-throw attempts Thursday night and defeated Glenvar 67-62 in a non-district boys' game.

Brian Whitaker was 7-of-9 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, and John Prillaman made 5-of-7 free-throw attempts down the stretch as North Cross held off Glenvar in the fourth quarter.

Whitaker had 16 points, Hal Johnson 12 and Prillaman 11 to lead the Raiders.

Glenvar (8-5) got 16 points from Corey Willis and 12 from James Williams.

The Highlanders were outscored 39-24 in the middle two quarters.

Floyd County 85

Roanoke Catholic 55

The Buffaloes raced to a 27-4 first-quarter lead and whipped the Celtics in a non-district game.

Jamie Warren had 17 points to lead the Buffaloes, and every player on the Floyd County roster scored.

Brendan McCarthy led Roanoke Catholic with 17 points. The Celtics played without leading scorer Tony Joyce, who missed the game with a thigh bruise.

APPOMATTOX - Staunton River shook off a junk defense and drilled 11 3-point field goals in a Seminole District victory over the Raiders.

Appomattox played Hunter Hoggatt, Cornelius Foxx and Jeff English man-to-man while the two other defenders were in a zone, but Hoggatt finished with 24 points including three 3-pointers, Foxx had a pair of 3-pointers and 14 points and English three more 3-pointers and 10 points.

LYNCHBURG - Abby Dickson sank a pair of free throws with seven seconds left to give the Celtics a Blue Ridge Conference victory.

Dickson had game highs of 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead Catholic (12-6, 11-2), which broke a tie with a minute left and made its final four points at the free-throw line.

Julie Fariss led Timberlake Christian (5-9, 2-7) with 16 points.
