CIVIL WAR BOOK'S AUTHORS TO APPEAR AT ROANOKE STORE

Authors C. Brian Kelly and Ingrid Smyer-Kelly will be signing their most recent book, ``Best Little Stories From the Civil War,'' which includes Smyer-Kelly's story, ``Varina: Forgotten First Lady,'' today at 3 p.m. at the Books-A-Million store on Hershberger Road in Roanoke.

The Civil War book is timed to appear on the eve of the 130th anniversary of the battle of Appomattox in April. ``Varina'' is the story of Varina Howell Davis, who in slightly more than a decade went from being a leading socialite and part of the White House inner circle to being imprisoned with her husband, Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

Kelly, lecturer in news writing at the University of Virginia and editor of Military History magazine, also is the author of ``Best Little Stories from the White House,'' and Smyer-Kelly also wrote ``First Ladies in Review.''
