BLACK, Bertha Turner, 93, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Friday, February 3, 1995. She was the widow of George E. Black, a member of Grandin Court Baptist Church, and a retiree from both the Roanoke City School System and Oakey's Funeral Service. Mrs. Black was preceded in death by three sisters, Florence Turner Waldron, Ila Turner, and Lillie Barger. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, George and Mary Black, Fincastle, Cecil and Mary T. Black, Roanoke; a daughter and son-in-law, Josephine and Jack Williamson, Arlington; four grandchildren, Reg Black, Ronnie Black, Ty Williamson, Karen Seymour; three great-grandchildren, Ryan Black, Rita Black, Nicholas Seymour. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Monday , from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, with the Rev. Carol Johnston officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. BOBBITT, Jesse James, 4, of Hot Springs, formerly of Buena Vista, died Thursday, February 2, 1995, at Alleghany Regional Hospital. Born November 8, 1990 in Lexington, he was the son of Kennie Nelson Bobbitt III of Lexington and Ruby Ann Houck Bobbitt Hill of Hot Springs. BROYLES, Louise M., 83, of Roanoke, passed away Friday, February 3, 1995, at a local hospital. She was the widow of Paul C. Broyles and was a member of the Bonsack Baptist Church. Surviving are two sisters, Evelyn M. Burrell, Eva M. Spencer; brother-in-law, Grady L. Burrell, all of Roanoke; also a number of nieces and nephews. He was a former Board of Director for the Crisis Pregnancy Center. He is preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn E. Chastang. CONWAY, Delsie Jessup, 89, of Stuart, died Thursday, February 2, 1995, in Roman Eagle Nursing Home in Danville. She was the widow of John Leonard Conway Sr. who died in September 29, 1966. She was the daughter of the late Elijah Jessup and Sallie Jessup Barnard. She was retired from the Pannel Knitting Company. Mrs. Conway is survived by two sons, John L. (Johnny) Conway and Jimmie Conway, both of Danville; one sister, Mrs. Ralph (Gladys) Durham, Meadows of Dan; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild. CROMER, Cecil Leroy, 64, of Blacksburg, died Friday, February 3, 1995, at the VA Medical Center, Salem, Va. Mr. Cromer was born in Montgomery County on May 31, 1930, a son of the late Cecil R. and Margie M. Caldwell Cromer. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Denny Edwards, Knoxville, Tenn., Sharon and Mike Sowers; and one grandson, J. R. Sowers, Christiansburg; one sister and brother-in-law, Ina Mae and Clinton Graves, Blacksburg; two brothers and sister-in-law, Haven and Judy Cromer, Panama City, Fla., and Kenneth Cromer, Vienna. CURRY, John Joseph Jr., (``Chip""), 45, of Christiansburg, died suddenly early Friday morning, February 3, 1995, at the Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was the son of the late John J. Curry Sr. and Mary Sutherland Curry. He received his BS degree from VPI and his Doctor of Juris Prudence from the George Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary. He served as a Lieuten ant in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam Era. A member of St. Thomas' Episcopal Church Vestry, he also served there as a member of the choir. Mr. Curry was a past president of the Montgomery, Floyd, Radford Bar Association and had practiced law in Christiansburg for the past twenty years. He was also a past president of the Christiansburg Lions Club. Surviving are his wife, Martha L. Curry; and two daughters, Anne Elizabeth Curry and Mary Christina Curry, both of Christiansburg. The body will be placed in the Chapel of Christ the King at St. Thomas' Church in Christiansburg and the family will receive friends there from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday from St. Thomas Episcopal Church, conducted by Dr. Robert Goldsmith, with interment to follow in Sunset Cemetery. She was a retired employee from Bassett Walker where she had worked for 27 years. She was a member of Town Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Thomas G. McCLAUGHERTY, Commander Harry Carr, U.S.N. Ret., 75, of Coronado, Calif., formerly of Narrows, died Thursday, February 2, 1995. He was born on April 14, 1919, and was the son of the late Charles Peck and Harriett Carr McClaugherty of Narrows. He was an outstanding football player for the Narrows High School and the University of Virginia. He was a decorated World War II Aviator in the Naval Air Corp where he served for 30 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Dickinson McClaugherty and a son, Harry Carr McClaugherty, Jr. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol M. and James Treadwell, Coronado, Calif.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Cheryl McClaugherty, Oldsmar, Fla., Victor and Emily McClaugherty, Norfolk Naval Base; a sister, Helen M. Jones, Arlington; two brothers, Allen McClaugherty, Narrows, Frank McClaugherty, Glade Springs; five grandchildren. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington. NEWTON, Bonnie Lucille Gross, of Narrows, died Thursday, February 2, 1995, in a Roanoke nursing home. She was born in Sanford, N.C. and was the daughter of the late Alvis and Eliza (Bessie) Hilliard Gross. She had been a resident of Narrows since 1928 when her late husband, Dr. Maury C. Newton Sr., began the practice of medicine in that community. She was active in community and religious affairs, being a member of the First Baptist Church, the Giles County Society, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the American Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Giles Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Bailey Gross and her sisters, Pauline Brooks Gross and Stella Kate Gross. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Maury C. Newton Jr., and Dr. Richard M. Newton Sr.; a sister, Willie Maxine Gross Gearheart; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Narrows with the Rev. Rick Painter officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Narrows. ORANGE, Russell Randolph, 84, of Newport News, died Thursday, February 2, 1995, at his home. Mr. Orange was born in Roanoke, March 23, 1910. He was a resident of Newport News since 1940. Mr. Orange retired 35 years in the Tool Makers Dept. from Newport News Shipyard. He was a member of Southwark Hunt Club in Surry, Va. for 49 years. He gave his heart to the Lord in 1989. He was a member of the First Friends Church and a member of the Adult Sunday School Class. He is survived by his beloved, devoted wife of 61 years, Dora Mae Orange; his daughter and son-in-law, Eva Mae and Edward Grinnell of Mathews; his son and daughter-in-law, Russell Wesley and Helen Orange of Hampton; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Also survived by two half sisters, Uldine Board of Roanoke, and Geraldine Dillon of Fincastle; a half brother, Paul Orange of Madison, N.C; his aunt, Alice Orange of Bedford County; his uncle, Hurbert Orange of Troutville; and many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by his friends for his kind and friendly ways. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. Meek, Marion; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 5, 1995, at 2 p.m. in the Seaver-Brown Chapel. Burial will follow in Laurel Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
