Dennis J. Nester of Dugspur died at the Twin County Regional Hospital in Galax at 2 a.m.
Nester was a passenger in a four-wheel-drive pickup truck driven by his cousin, Timothy Nester, according to a report filed by Trooper J.D. Koger. The driver accelerated to climb a sleet-covered hill on Virginia 638, slid off the right side of the road and struck a tree, Koger said.
The crash occurred at 12:15 a.m. Saturday about half a mile west of Dugspur and U.S. 221 in eastern Carroll County.
Beulah Nester of Dugspur, an aunt of the two men, said Saturday the men were first cousins. She said Dennis, or ``D.J.,'' Nester was a Dugspur native who had been recapping tires at nearby Archie's Garage until he was laid off recently.
She said Timothy Nester and a third passenger were uninjured. D.J. Nester leaves no direct survivors, but had a sister-in-law, two nieces and a nephew in the area, she said.
Beulah Nester said the truck struck a locust tree on property belonging to her son, Cleston, near a 30- to 40-foot patch of ice on the road.
