DICHTEL HEADS ACADEMY OF MEDICINE

DR. WILLIAM J. DICHTEL JR. has been elected president of the Roanoke Valley Academy of Medicine. Dichtel, an otolaryngologist, has practiced medicine in Roanoke since 1987. He is a physician at Head and Neck Surgery of Southwest Virginia. He has been president of the Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center and vice president of the professional staff at Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.

Other officers are DRS. LEE T. HELMS, president-elect; JOHN M. BUTLER, vice president; ANDREW G. ROTH, secretary-treasurer; KENNETH D. TUCK, Medical Society of Virginia councilor and American Medical Association delegate; H.C. ALEXANDER III, American Medical Association delegate; and R.L.A. KEELEY, parliamentarian.

DRS. JITENDRA S. DESAI, JOHN A. HAGY JR. and DAVID M. RANDOLPH were elected to the board of directors. The academy is a professional association of more than 450 physicians in the Roanoke Valley.

ADVERTISING

LINDEN B. ADAMS has been named director of account services at System4 Advertising Agency Inc. in Roanoke. Adams previously worked for Associated Advertising and in sales positions with WSET-TV, and WGOL and WJLM-FM radio stations.

LAW

J. SCOTT SEXTON, H. MICHAEL DENEKA and MELISSA W. ROBINSON have become partners with the Roanoke law firm of Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore. They have been with the firm since 1988. Also, K. BRETT MARSTON, GENIE K. RICH, PETER E. KANE, JOHN D. BONDERMAN and MARK W. DELLINGER have joined the firm as associates.

CHARLES D. FOX III and CHARLES E. MILLS III have formed a new law firm, Fox & Mills P.L.C., in Roanoke. Fox has practiced law in Roanoke for more than 30 years and will concentrate in the areas of business law, estate planning, nonprofit organizations and business litigation. Mills formerly was vice president and general counsel of North American Group in London and president of North American Bank in Amsterdam and has been on the board of directors of construction and mining operations in the southeastern United States.

MANUFACTURING

RONNIE G. HISE has been promoted to technical director of Westvaco Corp.'s bleached board division in Covington. He will be responsible for the quality control and technical departments. Hise joined Westvaco in 1984 as a research chemist at the Charleston, S.C., Research Center. In 1988 he was promoted to group leader of the pulping and bleaching group.

PHILIP LESTER has been named vice president-production of Nationwide Homes in Martinsville. He will be responsible for manufacturing and transportation operations. He succeeds SAM LAWRENCE, who recently retired after almost 25 years of service. Lester rejoined Nationwide in June 1994 as plant production manager. He worked for the company from 1972 to 1984 in various positions. Nationwide Homes produces modular homes, remodeling additions and commercial structures.

JAMES A. VEST has been elected executive vice president of Piedmont Label Co. Inc. in Bedford. Vest, an employee of the company sicne 1968, has been vice president of manufacturing and secretary of the corporation since 1973. COLIN P. SCHNEEWEISS has been elected vice president of sales and marketing. He became Piedmont's national sales account representative in 1990 after 13 years with Salem Label Co. in Salem, Ohio. He became director of sales and marketing in 1993.

MEDICINE

DR. J. BRUCE HAUSER has been elected president of the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Radiology, which represents dianostic radiologists and radiation oncologists throughout the United States. Hauser is a member of Radiology Associates of Roanoke and has practiced medicine in Roanoke since 1977.

NONPROFITS

Blue Ridge Community Services has elected officers for 1995: ONZLEE WARE, Roanoke attorney, chairman; PAMELA K. COX, Virginia Department of Corrections, vice chairman; SUSAN J. CLOETER, community volunteer, secretary; and JOHN M. HUDGINS JR., Waldrop Realty, treasurer. SHIRLEY WOODALL, Craig County teacher, and RITA N. FOSTER, health care professional, were elected to the executive committee in addition to the officers.

TRANSPORTATION

STEVEN G. HANES, director of Norfolk Southern's police department, has been elected to the executive committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Hanes began his career with Norfolk Southern Railway in 1985, where he was police superintendent for two years in Roanoke and for two years in Atlanta. In 1989 he became division chief of police of the Norfolk Southern police department before becoming director in 1994.

UNIONS

The newly installed officers of the Roanoke United Central Labor Council AFL-CIO are: WALTER W. WISE, International Association of Bridge, Structural & Ornamental Iron Workers Local Union #697, president; CALVIN ASHE, International Association of Machinists Local Union #165, vice president; MICHAEL MAYS, International Association of Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #100, treasurer; and DAVID LAYMAN, Communication Workers of America Local Union #2204, recording secretary. Trustees are BRUCE ROY, International Association of Fire Fighters Local Union #3194; JOHN CRAGGETT, International Union of Electronic Workers Local Union #161; and CATHY SHOWALTER, International Union of Electronic Workers Local Union #164.

The Roanoke council is comprised of 37 union affiliates representing more than 8,000 area workers.

UTILITIES

D. WAYNE HENINGER has been promoted to purchasing and materials management director for Appalachian Power Co. He formerly was purchasing supervisor in the company's general office purchasing and stores department in Roanoke.
